Mastering the Pull of Senses

Bhagavad Gita 18.51

Meaning · English

Endowed with a purified intellect, restraining the self with firm determination, abandoning sound and the other objects of the senses, and casting aside attachment and aversion.

Krishna is describing the person who has reached the stage he spoke of just before. Three terms carry it. Buddhi is the intellect, the part that weighs and decides; here it is viśuddha, purified, meaning cleared of the haze that wants and fears put on it. Dhriti is determination, a steadiness that holds when the mood shifts. Raga and dvesha are attachment and aversion, the pull toward what pleases and the push away from what hurts. Krishna's plain sense: a clear intellect, held by steady resolve, keeps the mind in check and gives up its grip on sound, touch, sight and the other objects of the senses. Then attachment and aversion are thrown aside. He does not ask Arjuna to stop hearing or seeing. The giving up is of the hold those things have. The reason is the problem he has been answering all along: a mind dragged by liking and disliking cannot see clearly, so it cannot act freely. Shankara reads the verse as a step in the path of knowledge, leading to Brahman. Ramanujа takes it as discipline that prepares the self for devotion. Madhva reads it as the self-mastery that makes worship possible. For the listener, the ask is a clear mind first, then steadiness, then loosening the two ropes.

Think of a dog on a long walk, tugging toward every smell and barking at every passing bike. The walker with a firm, calm hand on the lead does not stop the walk or silence the street. The dog is the senses, the hand is resolve, and the walker's clear head decides the route.

1. Pick one pull you feel daily, such as checking your phone on waking or reaching for a snack when bored. 2. Today, when it comes, wait for ten slow breaths before acting. Do not fight it; just wait. 3. Notice the liking or the dislike in your body: where it sits, how strong it is, whether it fades. 4. Then decide what to do. Note in one line what you chose.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor at night, phone in hand, her son in surgery. Every few seconds the screen offers news, messages, a way to look away. She also feels a sharp dread of every door that opens. Krishna's teaching would work in small steps. First, a clear head: she notices that the scrolling and the dread are both pulls, one toward relief and one away from fear. Second, steadiness: she puts the phone face down for a few minutes and sits with her feet on the floor. Third, the loosening: she lets the liking for distraction and the shrinking from fear be present without obeying either. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired, frightened mind grabs at whatever is nearest. The verse does not promise the surgery will go well, and it does not take the fear away. It describes a way of standing inside the fear. Anyone with lasting anxiety or sleeplessness is better served by speaking to a doctor as well.
