Living Lightly, Alone, Steady
Bhagavad Gita 18.52

Meaning · English
Living in solitude, eating lightly, with speech, body and mind held in check, always engaged in meditation, and having taken shelter in dispassion.
Krishna is describing how a person lives who is moving toward the state he has been sketching. Take three words. Vivikta means set apart, a secluded place or a quiet company. Laghu means light, so laghu-ashi is eating little and simply. Vairagya is dispassion: vi-raga, the colouring of attachment gone out of things. The plain sense is a daily life with few demands on it. The person seeks quiet, eats without heaviness, and keeps speech, body and mind on a short rein, which is what yata, controlled, points to. Meditation is not an hour set aside but the constant direction, nityam, always. Dispassion is not a mood to be struck but a shelter, samupashritah, something one goes into and stays inside. The reason is in the verses around it: attachment and aversion have been cast aside, and this is the life that keeps them from creeping back, since noise, heavy habits and scattered talk feed them. Krishna asks Arjuna to see that the inner work needs an outer shape. Shankara reads the verse as the discipline that supports knowledge of Brahman. Ramanuja takes the meditation as steady focus on the self as belonging to the Lord. Madhva stresses that this dispassion rests on devotion.
A candle burns steadily in a small room with the door closed and no draught. Carry the same flame into a crowded corridor and it gutters. The closed room is solitude, light eating and held speech; the steady flame is the mind that can stay with meditation without being blown about.
1. Choose one quiet spot at home and spend ten minutes there today with the phone in another room. 2. At your next meal, stop eating while you could still take a little more, and notice how the next hour feels. 3. Pick one conversation today and speak only what is needed. Notice what you were tempted to add. 4. Before sleep, sit for two minutes and notice where your attention went on its own.
A man finishes a family wedding at midnight, full of rich food, hoarse from talking, his phone still buzzing. He lies down and cannot settle. The verse speaks to that hour. Step by step: the heavy meal is part of why sleep is restless, so a lighter plate would have eased it. The long talking and the stream of messages kept his mind switched on, so a short stretch alone lets it come down. Then he can sit and see what his thoughts are doing, without chasing each one. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired, overfed, overstimulated person finds restraint harder. The verse also calls this a shelter of dispassion, which is the text's own teaching about where the practice rests, and it is not something a meal or a quiet room produces by itself. Nutrition and sleep advice agree that moderate meals suit most people, though needs differ with age, work and illness, and someone with a medical condition should follow their doctor. The verse does not promise that one quiet night removes worry, grief or the pull of old habits.
