Fit for Brahman

Bhagavad Gita 18.53

Meaning · English

Freed from egotism, violence, arrogance, desire, anger and selfishness, without possessiveness and at peace, a person becomes fit for union with Brahman.

Krishna gives Arjuna a list of what has to go. Ahankara is the "I-maker": aham is I, kara is making, the habit of building a self out of what one has done and owns. Nirmama is nir (without) plus mama (mine), a life that does not keep saying "mine". Brahma-bhuya is brahma (the vast reality) plus bhuya (becoming, being in that state). The six items are egotism, violence, arrogance, desire, anger and selfishness. Krishna names them as things to be freed from, in the same breath as being without possessiveness and being peaceful. Peace comes last in the list, as what remains when the others loosen. The word kalpate means is fit, is made ready. The text promises readiness, not a payment received. Krishna's reason is stated by the shape of the sentence: each item is a way of gripping, and gripping is what stands between a person and Brahman. Arjuna, who is about to fight, is told that the fitness is inward. Shankara reads it as the stage of the renouncer's knowledge, where such a person is ready to realise Brahman as his own self. Ramanuja reads it as the self becoming fit to realise its own true nature, held within devotion to the Lord. Madhva reads the fitness as readiness for liberation, which still depends on the Lord's grace.

A glass of muddy water, left on a table, clears by itself. Nobody filters it. The silt sinks and the water shows the bottom. Egotism, anger, desire and the rest are the silt. Peace is the water that was always there, and fitness for Brahman is the clear glass.

1. Pick one of the six: anger is easiest to catch. Today, each time you feel it rise, note it silently with the word "anger" and the time. 2. At night, spend two minutes recalling those moments and ask what each one was trying to protect: pride, a possession, a want. 3. Once today, hand something small to someone without a word about it: a seat, a pen, the last biscuit. Notice how long the thought "mine" lingers.

A brother and sister stand in the courtyard of their parents' house, a week after the funeral, deciding who keeps it. He has already counted what he spent on their father's care. She has already heard an insult in his tone. Krishna's list names what is moving in that courtyard: ego that wants credit, desire for the property, anger, a hold on what is called "mine". The verse would change the moment in steps. First, the anger is seen as anger, not as truth about the other person. Second, the word "mine" is noticed on the tongue before it is spoken. Third, the question shifts from what can be won to what is fair and what will keep the two of them speaking afterwards. Ordinary experience confirms that a person in a rage hears less and says things that cannot be taken back. The teaching does not promise the house will be divided well, or that grief for the parents will lift, or that a legal dispute will need no lawyer. It speaks only to the state of the person standing there.
