Calm That Turns to Love
Bhagavad Gita 18.54
Meaning · English
Settled in Brahman and serene in mind, he neither grieves nor craves. Equal toward all beings, he attains supreme devotion to me.
Three terms carry the verse. Brahma-bhuta means having become Brahman: living from the deepest reality rather than from the passing self. Prasanna-atma is a mind that has gone clear and bright, the way water does once it stops being stirred. Sama means level or even: the same regard for everyone. Krishna tells Arjuna what such a person is like. He does not grieve over what is gone, and he does not reach for what is missing. Both pains come from feeling incomplete, so when that feeling settles, both fall away. With the mind clear, he looks at every living being without ranking them. Then comes the surprise. Krishna does not end with calm. He says this person attains para bhakti, supreme devotion to him. Peace is the ground, and love of God grows in it. The commentators read the last clause differently. Shankara takes this devotion as the ripened state of knowledge itself. Ramanuja takes the Brahman-realization as knowing the self apart from matter, with loving devotion to the Lord as the higher fruit. Madhva stresses that this devotion rests on knowing God's greatness and is the way to liberation.
A glass of muddy water left on a table. Nothing is done to it, and slowly the silt sinks until the glass is clear and the light passes straight through. Grief and craving are the silt. The clear water is the settled mind, and what it finally lets through is devotion.
1. Tonight, pick one thing you are either mourning or wanting. Sit for five minutes with a glass of water and name it silently, once. 2. Do nothing about it for those five minutes. Just notice whether the pull softens as you sit. 3. Tomorrow, in a queue or on a bus, look at three strangers and tell yourself one plain fact about each, such as that each is tired or hurrying home. 4. Notice whether your regard for them feels even, or whether you ranked them.
A mother stands on a railway platform as the train carrying her son to a job in another country pulls away. Two things rise in her at once: sorrow that he has gone, and a hunger to call him back or to hear he has arrived. The verse would change the next minute in small steps. First she lets the pull go quiet, without arguing with it. Then her eyes clear enough to see the platform: the porter with his cart, an old man waiting alone, a girl crying beside her. Her care stops at the edge of her own family and widens a little. Krishna's teaching is that this evenness is where devotion begins, so she might end the minute with a short prayer instead of a worry. Ordinary experience agrees that a quiet mind sees more than a restless one. The verse does not promise that she will stop missing her son, or that the ache will be gone by evening. Grief that needs company or care still deserves it.
