Knowing Him As He Is
Bhagavad Gita 18.55
Meaning · English
By loving devotion one comes to know me, how much I am and who I am, in truth. Then, having known me in truth, one enters me thereafter.
Two words carry the teaching. Bhakti is loving devotion, a steady turning of the heart toward someone. Tattva means "that-ness": a thing as it really is, not as it is reported to be. Krishna tells Arjuna that bhakti is how a person comes to know him in tattva. The verse says "how much I am" and "who I am", so the knowing covers his extent as well as his nature. Information about him is not what it points to. Then comes the second step. Having known him in truth, the devotee enters him, and the word "thereafter" marks that entering as following the knowing. The reason is in the surrounding talk: ego, anger and grasping have fallen away, and the calm that remains turns toward him. What that clear mind wants is to know the one it loves, and Krishna says love is the way that knowing happens. Shankara reads the entering as the same event as the knowing, not a later reward. Ramanuja reads the knowing as itself a form of loving, and the entering as reaching Krishna. Madhva reads the entering as arriving into his presence, with devotee and Krishna still distinct.
A mother who has held her baby through many nights can tell a hungry cry from a tired one, though no manual could teach her. Her knowing grew out of her caring. That is the picture: love is the way of seeing a person truly, and deep knowing draws one into closeness.
1. Pick one person you love and spend ten minutes with them today, phone away, with no task to settle. 2. Notice one thing about them you did not know or had stopped seeing: a habit, a worry, a way they laugh. 3. Tonight, spend two quiet minutes turning your attention toward God in whatever form is dear to you, and notice whether wanting to know comes before asking for anything.
A man sits by his father's hospital bed on the second night. He has read the discharge notes twice and knows the medicines by name, yet he feels he is still watching from outside. Then he starts doing small things: wetting his father's lips, noticing which song he hums when the pain eases, learning his silences. By morning he can tell restlessness from fear before the nurse says a word. The verse speaks to that shift. Krishna teaches that knowing someone as they truly are comes through loving attention, not through facts gathered at a distance, and that the knowing deepens into closeness. Ordinary experience confirms the first part: we understand best the people we have cared for longest. The verse then turns this toward Krishna himself, and what it says of entering him is the text's own teaching about the end of devotion. It does not promise that the father recovers, that grief will be lighter, or that attention replaces the doctor. It says only what love, patiently kept, is able to know.
