Offering All Actions

Bhagavad Gita 18.57

Meaning · English

Offering every action to me with your whole awareness, holding me as your highest aim, take shelter in an intellect united with God, and keep your consciousness absorbed in me always.

Three words carry the teaching. Sannyasa means giving over, laying something down at another's feet. It does not mean walking away from work. Karma is action, and the text says every action, with none held back. Buddhi-yoga is the intellect joined to God, the part of us that weighs and decides, yoked to Him. Krishna tells Arjuna to hand over all his actions with full awareness, to hold Krishna as his highest aim, to shelter in that steadied intellect, and to keep his mind on Him always. The actions stay. The claim over them is given up. Krishna says this because Arjuna is torn between fighting and withdrawing, and Krishna does not ask him to pick one. He asks him to make the action itself the offering, so the work has somewhere to go besides his own gain. It asks Arjuna to keep working, to point the work at God, and to turn back to Him each time the mind drifts. Shankara reads the giving up as dropping the sense of being the doer, held by a discerning mind. Ramanuja reads buddhi-yoga as action done with devotion, as service to the Lord. Madhva stresses that the shelter rests on knowing God as supreme over all.

A courier crosses a city with one parcel. He climbs stairs, waits at crossings, and argues with traffic, but every step is measured against the address on the label. His work looks like anyone's walking. The address sets it apart. The steps are our actions, and the address is Krishna.

1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes, answering a message, or walking to the shop. 2. Before you begin, say silently, This is for You, and mean it for those few minutes. 3. When your mind drifts to praise, worry or result, notice it and gently return to the task and that thought. 4. At night, recall in one minute how the offered task felt compared with the others.

A taxi driver sits in dawn traffic with a passenger who may miss a flight. His chest is tight, his hands grip the wheel, and he rehearses blame. The verse would change this moment in steps. First, he names the drive as his work and the outcome as something he cannot fully hold. Second, he gives the drive over, to God as his aim, and keeps his eyes on the road, the mirror and the next gap. Third, each time his mind flares into what-ifs, he turns back to that offering. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind split between the task and its fears does the task worse. The verse does not promise the flight will be caught, or that anxiety will vanish for good. It does not replace help from a doctor where distress is heavy or lasting. What it offers is a steadier place to stand while the work is done, and a purpose that does not depend on how the morning ends.
