Grace Against Pride
Bhagavad Gita 18.58
Meaning · English
Keep your mind always on me, and by my grace you will cross every obstacle. But if, out of pride, you do not listen, you will perish.
Three words carry the teaching. Mat-chittah means the mind (chitta) that rests on me: remembrance kept up, not visited now and then. Prasada means grace, a favour that arrives as a gift, not a wage. Ahankara means the "I-maker", the sense of being the sole author and owner of what one does. Krishna sets these against each other. If Arjuna keeps Krishna in mind, grace carries him over every obstacle, however many and however steep. If he refuses to listen because his own self-importance has the loudest voice, he is lost. The reason sits in the verses around it. Arjuna is about to decide, on his own judgment, what he will and will not do. Krishna names the real danger. It is less the enemy army than a mind so sure of itself that advice cannot enter. Remembrance keeps the ear open, and pride shuts it. Krishna asks Arjuna to keep him in mind and to hear him out. Shankara reads the obstacles as the hardships of worldly life, crossed by grace. Ramanuja reads the remembrance as loving devotion, and grace as what removes whatever stands between the devotee and God. Madhva stresses that grace is the cause of rescue, and that pride means thinking oneself independent of God.
A small boat is tied to a tug and crosses a rough channel. The skipper, sure he knows the water better, cuts the rope and takes the helm alone. The tow rope is remembrance and grace, and cutting it is pride.
1. Today, when someone corrects or advises you, count to five before you answer. 2. In those five seconds, notice any heat or stiffness in your chest or jaw. That is the self defending itself. 3. Then repeat the advice back in your own words, aloud or silently, before you accept or reject it. 4. Tonight, take one minute to name one piece of advice you brushed off this week, and who gave it.
A father is loading the family car for a long trip. His brother-in-law, a mechanic, says the brakes sound worn. The father bristles. He has kept that car going for years himself, and being told otherwise stings. The verse speaks to that sting. Krishna tells Arjuna that listening is the way across obstacles, and that pride, the self-importance that cannot hear, leads to ruin. In the moment, the first step is to notice the heat of the reaction. The second is to remember what is actually at stake, which is the children in the back seat and not his record as a repairer. The third is to hear the warning out and have the brakes looked at. Ordinary experience confirms that a defensive mind hears very little. The verse does not promise that the road will be free of trouble, or that every piece of advice will be right. It asks only that the ear stay open when the self would rather close it.
