Meaning · English
If, taking shelter in pride, you think, "I shall not fight," this resolve of yours is false. Your own nature will engage you in the work all the same.
Two words carry the verse. Ahankara is the sense of "I" that claims to be the sole author of what happens, from aham, "I", and kara, "maker". Prakriti is material nature, the whole set of tendencies a person is born with and has built up. Krishna tells Arjuna that his announcement, "I shall not fight", is mithya, false. It is not false because Arjuna lacks sincerity. It is false because it rests on the pride of the maker, as if Arjuna alone decided what he would be. Krishna gives the reason: Arjuna is a warrior by temperament and training, and that nature will put him to work regardless. A decision made from ego, against one's own nature, will not hold. So the verse asks Arjuna to look at where his refusal really comes from, and not to mistake a surge of feeling for settled judgment. Shankara reads the verse as a warning that a choice rooted in ego is no real freedom. Ramanuja reads it as Krishna reminding Arjuna that his duty, set by his nature, cannot be dropped by declaration. Madhva stresses that nature itself acts under the Lord's direction, so the fault is in claiming independence.
A swimmer in a river announces that he will stay exactly where he is. The current does not ask him. Within minutes he has drifted downstream. His announcement was sincere, but the water was already moving him. Arjuna's declaration is the announcement; his nature is the current.
1. Today, when you catch yourself saying "I won't do that" about a task, pause for one minute and ask whether the refusal comes from judgment or from wounded pride. 2. Write the refusal on paper and, beside it, the real reason. Read both slowly. 3. Notice, over the day, one thing you do again and again without deciding to. Ask what in your nature draws you to it. 4. Before evening, take one small step on the task you resisted, for ten minutes, and see what your resistance does.
A man stands in the corridor of a hospital after his father's surgery. The doctor has said his father will need daily care at home. He tells his sister, "I can't do this, I won't," and walks to the window. Part of him means it. Part of him is already working out which room the bed could go in. Krishna's teaching shows two things in that moment. The refusal was spoken from the "I" that says it alone decides, and it was spoken in shock. Underneath, his long habits of care and duty are still running, and they will probably move his hands before his declaration is finished. The verse would ask him not to treat the first loud sentence as the final one. He can wait until the shock settles, then ask what he actually is prepared to do and what he truly cannot. Ordinary experience agrees that words said in panic or hurt often differ from what we do a day later. The verse does not promise that duty will be easy or that the man should override real limits of money, health or strength. It does not make the grief smaller.
