Insulted by the lowest of men, he stayed in his own duty, took hold of a clear and steady resolve, and sang this song. "This person is not the cause of my joy and sorrow. Nor are the gods, nor the body, nor the planets, nor karma, nor time. They say the mind alone is the highest cause, the one that keeps the wheel of worldly life turning."
Krishna tells Uddhava how the mendicant of Avanti answered his tormentors. Krishna sets the scene in the first half: the man has been insulted by the lowest sort of people, yet he holds to his own duty and takes up a steady, clear resolve. Then the song itself, which is the mendicant's voice inside Krishna's telling. He names what could be blamed: this man or that, the gods, the body, the planets, karma, time. None of them, he says, is the cause of his joy and sorrow. The mind is. Three words carry it. Manas is the mind, from man, to think. Dhriti is steadiness, from dhri, to hold, like a hand that does not let go. Sattvika means clear, from sattva, clarity. The wheel is the round of birth and worldly life, and the mind is what keeps it turning. The commentators take the list as a sweep of every outside cause a person might point to. The question behind it is plain. When a man has been spat on and robbed, where does the pain come from? He answers that the blow lands outside, but joy and sorrow are made inside.
Two people are caught in the same afternoon rain. One stands at a window with tea and watches it fall. The other has a train to catch and feels every drop as an insult. The rain is the same. What each one makes of it differs, and that is the mind's part.
1. Tonight, recall one moment today when someone's words or actions upset you. 2. Write down in a line what actually happened, as a camera would have seen it. 3. Beside it, write what your mind added: the meaning, the story, the prediction. 4. Notice, for a minute, which part still hurts. Do this once a day for a week.
A young bus driver finishes his last run. A passenger shouted at him over a late departure, and now, walking home, he is still arguing with the man in his head. Dinner will be cold and his children will get his bad mood. The verse would change that walk in small steps. He first sees the shout was one sentence, lasting seconds, and that the replaying has gone on for an hour. Then he separates the two: what the man said, and what his own mind keeps building from it. Then he lets the second part loosen its grip while his steps carry him home. Ordinary experience bears this out: the same remark stings more on a tired day than a rested one. The verse does not promise the shout will stop mattering, and it does not make real injustice acceptable. It also says nothing for someone whose low mood will not lift. That calls for a doctor, not only a change of view.
