Meaning · English

The mind, grown strong, brings forth the qualities, and from them come actions of many kinds: white, black and red. From these, matching paths of rebirth arise. The self does not act, yet the mind sets everything moving. The golden one, my friend, only looks on. The mind takes up a body of its own making, goes after its desires and enjoys them. Tied to the qualities, it is bound.

The mendicant of Avanti sings this, in Krishna's retelling. Three key words carry it. Guna means a quality or strand of nature; the text names three, shown here as white, black and red, which are light, darkness and restlessness. Karma means action, from kri, to do. Sakha means friend, one who stands beside you. The song runs in order. The mind is strong, and it brings forth the qualities. From them come actions of different kinds, pure, dark or driven. Each kind of action leads to a path that matches it. So the mind does the steering. The self, meanwhile, does not act. It is called golden and a friend: bright, close and only watching. The mind then takes up a body that suits it, chases what it wants and enjoys it. Because it clings to the qualities, it is bound. The mendicant sings this to answer his tormentors. If people, stars or gods were the cause of his pain, he would be helpless. The song says the chain runs through the mind, so he is not. Sridhara Svami reads the golden friend as the Lord who dwells within as witness. The song asks the listener to see where the binding happens: in wanting and clinging, not in the one who watches.

A child in a dark cinema grips the armrest through a frightening film, while a friend beside her sits calm and watches her. The screen is the mind's making; the gripping is the binding; the quiet friend in the next seat is the golden one who only looks on.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you wanted today, such as a snack, a reply or a purchase. 2. Sit for two minutes and trace it back: what thought came first, what want followed, what action came after. 3. Say quietly to yourself, "The mind is doing this." Notice whether the want loosens even slightly. 4. Do this once a day this week, always with something small.

A man stands in a kitchen at night, furious over a curt message from his brother. He is already typing a long reply. Each line he writes makes the anger stronger. The song would slow him at the first step. The anger is not only in the message; the mind is building it, adding past hurts and imagined tones. If he sees that, there is a gap between the feeling and the sending. He can put the phone down and drink water, and answer in the morning. Ordinary experience confirms that a reply written in heat often says more than we meant, and that a pause changes what we write. The song speaks of the self as a watching friend, and that is the text's own teaching, offered as it stands. The limit is plain: seeing the mind at work does not make the anger vanish or settle the quarrel with his brother. It gives him one moment of room before the next action begins.
