Every Vow Serves One Aim

Giving, one's own duty, the lesser and greater restraints, learning, works, good vows: all of these end in one aim, the holding of the mind. The highest yoga is the mind gathered in steadiness. For one whose mind is gathered and quiet, what are gifts and the rest to him? Say it. And for one whose mind is unrestrained and going to ruin, what use are they either?

The mendicant of Avanti, in Krishna's retelling, lists the things a good person does: giving, keeping one's own duty, the restraints and observances, hearing scripture, honest work, firm vows. Then he names the one thing they are all for. The word is manonigraha: mano is mind, nigraha is holding in check. Each practice is a way of training the mind to stay put. Yoga here means that steadiness, and its peak is samadhi, from a root meaning to place together: the mind gathered into one. Then he asks two questions. If the mind is already gathered and quiet, what is left for charity and vows to accomplish? The work is done. If the mind is unrestrained and heading for ruin, what do they accomplish? Nothing lasting, because the aim was missed. The commentators read this as a ranking of means and end, not a dismissal of the means. It is taught here because the mendicant has just been insulted, and he is explaining why none of it touched him: his joy and sorrow were never in other people's hands. They sit in the mind, so the mind is where the labour belongs. It asks the listener to check, honestly, whether a vow or a gift is leaving the mind quieter.

A bucket with a hole in the bottom. Someone can haul water to it all day, in good faith, with strong arms, and it never fills. Giving, vows and duties are the hauling. The unrestrained mind is the hole, and mending it is what the hauling was for.

1. Choose one practice you already keep: a gift, a fast, a prayer, a task done for others. 2. Tonight, spend two minutes asking: after doing it, was my mind quieter or more restless, prouder or more irritable? 3. Write one honest line about the answer. 4. Tomorrow, do the same practice slowly, with your attention on what you are doing. Notice whether anything in the mind settles.

A woman keeps a fast on a vow day. By noon she is short with her mother and counting the hours. The verse asks one question of that moment: what was the fast for? In the mendicant's song, vows exist to steady the mind. Seen that way, her snapping is information, not failure. She might soften the vow's edges, eat something if her body needs it, say sorry, or do the same act with more attention. Ordinary experience confirms that hunger and tiredness wear down restraint, so a practice can sometimes work against its own purpose. The verse does not promise that a steady mind arrives quickly, or that any practice suits every body. Fasting is not safe for everyone, and anyone who is ill, pregnant or on medication should ask a doctor before keeping one. What the verse gives her is a test for any vow: whether it leaves the mind more settled.
