That reality, single, free of alternatives, beyond the reach of speech and mind, true and vast, became two through its own maya, whose fruit is form. Of the two, one is the thing known, prakriti, which holds both cause and effect. The other is knowing, a different state of being, and it is called purusha.

Three words carry this. Maya comes from ma, to measure: the power by which the unmeasured shows itself in measured shapes. Prakriti is nature, the stuff of the world, from kri, to make. Purusha is the person, the knower, the one who is present in the body as in a city (the word is often explained as the one who dwells in the city). Krishna says the single reality, which words and mind cannot grasp, became two through its own power. One side is prakriti, the known: it contains both cause and effect, the seed and what grows from it. The other side is knowing itself, a different kind of thing, and its name is purusha. The commentators read maya here as the reality's own power, not a trick played on it. Uddhava has asked how the world is counted. Krishna answers so that the listener can stop seeing alternatives where there are none, as he promised at the start of the chapter. The two are not rivals. They are one reality seen as what is known and what knows. Krishna asks the listener to tell them apart: the body and mind that are watched, and the one who watches.

A theatre holds a lit stage and a dark seat. The set, the actors and the plot belong to the stage. The one following the story belongs to the seat. Both are in one hall. Prakriti is the stage with everything that happens on it. Purusha is the watcher who knows it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes somewhere quiet, with a light ache, an itch, or the weight of your hands. 2. Notice one sensation or thought and say inwardly, 'This is being known.' 3. Then say, 'There is the one who knows it.' Stay with that second sentence for a minute. 4. When a worry comes tomorrow, repeat the two sentences once before you answer it.

A man lies awake after twisting his knee on the stairs. It swells and throbs, and his mind runs ahead: he will miss work, he is getting old, it will never heal. In the old teaching the swelling and the fear both belong to prakriti, the known. Something else is aware of them: purusha. So he can say two plain things: there is a hot, tight knee, and there is a thought about the future. He is not yet asked to fix either. Ordinary experience confirms that naming a feeling, instead of being swept along by it, often takes some of its grip off. In the morning he still has to ice the knee, rest it and see a doctor if it does not settle. The verse does not stop pain, mend a joint or replace treatment. It offers a way of standing while hurt: the body is known, and there is a knower. That the knower is a separate kind of thing, and what it is, is the text's own teaching.
