Meaning · English

Dullness, restlessness and clarity: these three strands arose in prakriti as I stirred her, and with the assent of the purusha. From them came the thread, the first stirring of action. The great principle, mahat, came joined to that thread. Then, as it changed again, the ego was born, the maker of 'I', the one that deludes.

Three words carry the verse. Guna means a strand, one of three fibres twisted into a single rope. Tamas is dullness and heaviness, rajas is restlessness and drive, and sattva is clarity and calm. Ahamkara is the ego, from aham, 'I', and kara, maker: the part that says 'this is me, this is mine'. Mahat means 'the great', the first great stirring of knowing in creation. Krishna tells Uddhava how the world unfolds. Prakriti, the stuff of the world, begins in balance. Krishna stirs her, and the purusha, the witness, gives assent. The three strands then show themselves. From them come the thread, a first principle of activity, and mahat, joined to it. As mahat changes further, the ego appears. Krishna calls it vimohana, the deluding one, because it takes the whole for a part and says 'I' of what is only a workings of nature. The commentators read the thread and mahat as activity and knowing, the first movements before any single self appears. It is taught here because Uddhava has asked how the world is built and how to leave its grip. If the ego is something that arose late, in a sequence, then it is not the foundation of who one is. Krishna asks Uddhava to see the sequence and so loosen the hold of 'I'.

Think of one rope pulled apart into three fibres, then of a knot tied in it. The strands are the three gunas. The knot, tightened until it seems to be the rope's whole nature, is the ego: made from the rope, yet taking itself for what the rope is.

1. Tonight, pick one moment from the day when you felt irritated or proud. 2. Write one plain sentence about it, first with 'I' in it, then again without 'I', only what happened. 3. Notice how the first version carries more weight than the second. 4. Next time you catch yourself saying 'I' in anger, pause for one breath and name which strand is loudest: heavy, restless or clear.

A man lies awake at two in the morning after an argument with his brother about their father's land. He replays it. Every sentence begins with 'I': I was right, I was insulted, I gave up so much. His body is tight and his mind will not settle. The verse offers a different order of events. The words came out of a mood first: tiredness, restlessness, a little clarity trying to speak. Only then did 'I' gather them into a grievance and a story about who he is. In the dark, he can take the heat apart. Some of it is heaviness, some is drive, and some is a quiet part that already knows the quarrel can be mended. Seeing that, he may stop defending a self that was assembled after the fact and ask the smaller question of what actually happened. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness makes every slight feel personal. The verse does not promise that the quarrel will end, that the hurt will go, or that sleep will come. It describes how the sense of 'I' is built, in Krishna's teaching, and nothing more.
