Ego is of three kinds: the clear, the restless and the dull. Krishna says it is his own making. It is the cause of the subtle elements, of the senses and of the mind, and it is made of both what knows and what does not know. From the dull ego the subtle elements arose, and from them the objects of the senses. From the restless ego came the senses themselves. From the clear ego came the gods, and the eleven.

Krishna is still telling Uddhava how the world unfolds, and now he reaches the sense of "I". The word is ahamkara, the "I-maker", from aham (I) and kara (making). In the Samkhya Krishna teaches, it is the step where a bare world of nature becomes my body, my senses and my mind. He says it comes in three kinds, one for each guna. The sattvic kind is called vaikarika, the restless kind taijasa, and the dull kind tamasa. Another word matters: tanmatra, "that alone", the subtle element, such as pure sound or pure touch, before it thickens into things. Krishna says the dull ego gives these subtle elements and then the gross objects made from them. The restless ego gives the senses, the indriyas, the powers by which we reach objects. The clear ego gives the gods who preside over the senses, and the eleven, which the commentators count as the ten senses together with the mind. He also calls the ego cidacinmaya, made of the conscious and the unconscious, because it mixes the knower with the known. The reason for teaching this is to show Uddhava where bondage starts. The world does not trap anyone from outside. It is built through the "I", and the three gunas work inside it.

Curdled milk in a pan separates into thick curd, thin whey and light cream. One pot, three results, each with its own weight. The single sense of "I" is like that pot, and the dull, restless and clear ego are what settles out of it.

1. Pick one ordinary hour today, such as a walk or washing up, and notice each time you think "I" in a thought: I want, I am tired, I know. 2. Quietly sort each one: heavy and dull, restless and wanting, or calm and clear. 3. Do not change anything. Just see which kind comes most often. 4. At night, recall one moment of each kind if you can.

A young woman stands to give a speech at her sister's wedding. Her hands are cold and her heart is racing. Her mind says "I will fail". Then it says "I want them to love this". Then it says "I could just sit down". Krishna's teaching would have her notice that this one "I" is not one thing. The want to be admired is the restless part. The wish to freeze and sit down is the dull part. The plain care for her sister is the clear part. Seeing them apart, she can let the care lead and speak to her sister rather than to the crowd. Ordinary experience agrees that a racing heart is felt in the body before it is understood in the mind. This teaching is the text's own account of how the self is built, and today's understanding does not weigh it. It does not promise that her nerves will vanish or that the speech will go well. It offers only a way of seeing what is speaking inside her.
