Moved by me, all the principles, which can only act by joining together, brought forth an egg, my finest dwelling. In that egg, resting on the waters, I came to be. From my navel a lotus rose, called the universe, and in it the Self-born one appeared.
Three words carry the verse. Bhava means a principle or constituent, from bhu, to become: the things listed earlier, such as the gunas, mahat, ahankara, the senses and the elements. Samhatya-karin means acting only by joining; none of these principles can make anything alone. Atmabhu means self-born, from atma and bhu, a name for Brahma, the maker of the worlds. Krishna tells Uddhava that every one of these principles was set in motion by him. Working together, they produced an egg, which he calls his best dwelling place. The egg floated on water. In it he came to be, and from his navel grew a lotus named the universe. In that lotus appeared Brahma, who is born of no parent. Krishna teaches this here because Uddhava asked how the world unfolds in Samkhya. The earlier verses gave the parts in order. This one shows what moves them and where they come to rest: the parts are real, but they act only because Krishna moves them, and the egg is his house. The listener is asked to see that no part of the world stands on its own. The commentators read this as the answer to who stands behind the machinery.
At a wedding, cooks stand at separate pots, one on rice, one on sweets, one on lentils. Each knows only its own task. One meal reaches the guests because the head cook calls the order. The pots are the principles, and the head cook is Krishna.
1. Tonight, pick one made thing, such as your tea or dinner plate. Spend two minutes naming every part that came together to make it. 2. Ask yourself what gathered those parts into one thing. Stay with the question for a minute without answering fast. 3. Before you eat or drink it, say one short line of thanks to Krishna.
A mother is awake at three in the morning beside her newborn's cot. She watches the tiny hands and cannot say how this person came together out of so many parts. Krishna's account gives her a way to hold that wonder. The body, breath and mind she sees are parts joined to act as one. According to the text, none of them moves unless Krishna moves it. The egg on the water and the lotus from his navel say that the first dwelling was his, and the first maker came from him. So the child in front of her is not a stranger to him. This does not make her night shorter or her fear smaller. It does not tell her what to do about a fever or a feed, and a doctor is still the one to call where one is needed. Ordinary experience does agree that tiredness makes small things look large, and that remembering where a thing came from can quiet the mind.
