Meaning · English

Brahma, the self of the whole universe, joined with tapas and with rajas, and by my grace made the worlds together with their guardians. He made them in three: bhur, bhuvah and svar. Svar became the home of the gods. Bhuvah became the place of the beings between. Bhurloka belongs to mortals and those like them. Beyond all three is the place of the siddhas.

Three words carry this teaching. Tapas is effort held steady, from tap, to heat: the heat of keeping at a task. Rajas is the guna of motion and desire, from raj, to colour or stir. Siddha is one who has arrived, from sidh, to reach the goal. Krishna tells Uddhava how Brahma, born from the lotus, made the worlds. Brahma did not work alone and did not work from his own strength. He had steady effort, he had the restless drive of rajas that sets any making going, and he had Krishna's grace. Krishna names that grace outright, so Brahma's making rests on it. The worlds come in three layers. Svar, the upper, is where the gods live. Bhuvah, the middle, is for the beings called bhutas. Bhurloka, the lowest, is for mortals and similar creatures. Then comes the last clause: the siddhas have a place beyond all three layers. The point for Uddhava is that the whole layered order is made of gunas and ranked by them. Krishna is preparing him for the teaching that follows, on how to rise beyond the gunas. The listener is asked to see that even the highest of the three worlds is still inside the made order. The siddhas' place is named as lying past it.

A tall house has a ground floor, a middle floor and a roof terrace, all built by one builder from one plan. Beside it, across the courtyard, stands a separate room that no staircase of the house reaches. The three floors are the three worlds. The room apart is where the siddhas dwell.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and list what you did today in three groups: restless doing, steady effort, and rest. 2. Mark which group the day was mostly made of, and say it to yourself plainly, without judging it. 3. Tomorrow morning, before starting your first task, name the one thing you hope will carry it through, whether grace, help or good fortune. Notice whether the work feels lighter.

A woman is up at four in the morning, shaping dough in a rented kitchen she has only just opened. Her back aches. The urge that got her out of bed is restlessness as much as devotion to the work. She wonders whether that urge is something to be ashamed of. Krishna's account says Brahma made the worlds with tapas and with rajas, and that Krishna's grace stood behind both. Read this way, the drive that builds things is not a fault. It is one working part of a made order, and effort is joined with something given. In her kitchen the step is small: she can use the drive, keep the effort steady, and still say that the chance to begin was not entirely her own doing. Ordinary experience confirms that restlessness starts things and that steady effort finishes them. It also confirms that a person running only on drive burns out. The verse does not promise the bakery will succeed, it does not ease tiredness, and it does not replace sleep or a doctor if the exhaustion deepens.
