Meaning · English
Below the earth, the Lord made the dwellings of the asuras and the nagas. All the destinations of actions, which are made of the three gunas, lie within the three worlds. Yoga, austerity and renunciation lead to pure destinations: Mahar, Jana, Tapas and Satya. But the destination of bhakti-yoga is Krishna himself.
Three words carry it. Guna means a strand or quality, one of the three threads (sattva, rajas, tamas) that every action is woven from. Gati means a going, a destination, from the root gam, to go. Nyasa means laying down, from putting a thing aside: renunciation. Krishna first fills in the map. Under the earth are the homes of the asuras and nagas. Every action woven of the gunas, whether harsh, restless or calm, ends in some place within the three worlds. Then he names three disciplined paths, yoga, austerity and renunciation, and says their destinations are pure. These are the four higher worlds: Mahar, Jana, Tapas and Satya. Then the sentence turns. For the one who practises bhakti, loving devotion from bhaj, to share in, the destination is not a place on the map. It is Krishna. Uddhava has been asking where actions lead, and Krishna answers completely: every road reaches somewhere, even the purest. The listener is asked to see the difference between arriving in a world and arriving in a person. Sridhara Svami, as the commentators generally do, takes the four pure worlds as lying beyond the three, yet still among created realms.
A railway map shows many lines, and each ends at a named station, some gloomy, some lovely. A traveller going to a close friend's house buys no ticket to a station at all, because the journey ends at a person. Actions end at places on the map. Devotion ends at Krishna.
1. Tonight, for five minutes, write down three things you did today. 2. Beside each, write what you hoped it would bring you: thanks, rest, money, relief. 3. Mark any act you did only for the sake of someone you love, or for God. 4. Notice which marked or unmarked acts left you lighter, and say a short thanks for one of them.
A woman has saved for years toward a flat. The day the keys arrive she stands in the empty rooms and feels oddly flat herself. She is glad, but the gladness is thinner than she expected. Krishna's account gives her a way to read that moment. Every effort ends in some place, and even the best places are only places. The aim of devotion lies in a person, not a location. Step by step, she can ask what she was really reaching for, and whether she wanted the flat or the home it was meant to hold: her mother's visits, her children's noise, a table with people at it. She can then turn toward those people, and toward the thanks she owes, instead of looking for the next goal. Ordinary experience confirms that a reached goal often brings a short satisfaction and then a new wanting. The teaching does not promise the flatness will vanish, and it does not replace a doctor. If low mood lasts for weeks, that deserves proper medical attention.
