Meaning · English
By me, who am time, the soul of time and the one who ordains, this world is bound to its actions. In this stream of the gunas it rises and it sinks. Small or great, thin or thick, whatever thing comes into being, all of it is joined to both: to prakriti, nature, and to purusha, the spirit.
Three words carry this teaching. Kala is time, the passing that changes everything. Guna means a strand, a quality, also a rope; there are three, sattva, rajas and tamas, and everything is twisted from them. Prakriti is nature, the stuff the world is made from. Purusha is the person, the knowing one who dwells within. Krishna tells Uddhava that he himself is time, and also the one who sets things in order, so time is not blind. Because the world is bound to its actions, each act ripens and carries beings along. They rise when one guna lifts them and sink when another pulls them down, like a stream with ups and downs. Then he widens the view. Small or large, thin or thick, no thing is made of nature alone. Each has prakriti and purusha joined in it. This answers a worry Uddhava could have after hearing about worlds and destinations: if everything keeps rising and sinking, what is it, and who is in charge? Krishna's answer is that the movement is real, it is ordered, and nothing in it is only matter. The teaching asks the listener to see the rise and sink without being surprised by it, and to remember that something knowing is joined to every thing.
A cloth is made of warp and weft. Hold a thick blanket or a thin handkerchief to the light and both threads are there, crossing in every inch. Nature and spirit are joined in everything in the same way, whether it is a grain of rice or a mountain.
1. Tonight, write down three changes in your mood or energy from today: a lift, a dip, a flat stretch. Note the hour of each. 2. Beside each, write what you had just done, eaten, or heard. 3. Tomorrow, when a dip comes, say quietly, "this is rising and sinking," and wait ten minutes before deciding anything important. 4. Once during the day, look at a small thing, a leaf or a cup, and remember that something living and knowing is joined to everything made.
A young mother is awake at three in the morning with a baby who will not settle. An hour ago she felt tender. Now she feels a hot flash of anger at the crying, and under it a heavy wish to just lie down and stop. Then the baby quiets, and tenderness returns as if nothing had happened. The verse gives her a way to read this. Krishna tells Uddhava that beings rise and sink in a stream of qualities and that time carries them. Her anger and her heaviness are two of those swings, passing through her and not a verdict on her. So she can name the swing, put the baby down safely for a minute, drink water, and answer the crying only after the heat has passed. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint, and that a feeling named is easier to carry. The verse does not end the exhaustion or the crying. It is no substitute for a doctor or for help when sleeplessness, low mood or fear stay heavy for days, and she should ask for that help.
