That from which a thing begins, and into which it ends, is also what it is in the middle. Its changed shapes serve only for everyday dealing, as things made of gold or of clay do. Taking hold of a cause, an earlier state turns into another. That which is the beginning and the end of something is called its truth.

Three words carry this. Vikara is change, from the root meaning to make otherwise: the altered shape of something. Vyavahara is everyday dealing, the buying, naming and using we do with shapes. Satya, truth or the real, comes from sat, that which is. Krishna gives a test for what is real in a thing: look at what it comes from and what it returns to. That same stuff is also what it is in the middle. A pot is clay before the potter, clay while it holds water, and clay once it breaks. The pot-shape is a change laid over clay. It is useful, and it earns its name in daily dealing, but it has no standing of its own apart from the clay. Gold works the same way, whether it is an ornament or a coin. Next Krishna describes how change happens: an earlier state takes hold of a cause, its material, and turns into another state. So truth, in his sense, is the lasting cause under the passing forms. He does not call the forms nothing. The commentators read this as preparing the ground for what follows about prakriti and purusha. It comes here because Uddhava is being shown how the world rises and folds back, and this is the rule for telling what stays from what only changes. It asks the listener to look past the shape to the stuff.

An ice cube sits in a glass. Before the freezer it was water, and once the glass warms it is water again. The cube is a shape the water took for a while. You can hold it, name it and cool a drink with it, yet it never stopped being water. The world's shapes stand to their cause as that cube stands to the water.

1. Tonight, pick one object in your kitchen made of a single material, such as a steel cup or a clay pot. 2. Hold it for a minute and ask what it was before it had this shape, and what it becomes if broken or melted. 3. Say its name aloud, then say the material's name. 4. Notice which word describes what it is all the way through, and which describes only how it is used.

A man stands in his late mother's room while his sister cuts her old cotton saree into cushion covers. Each snip hurts. He feels something is being destroyed. Then he looks at the cloth in his hands. It is the same soft cotton, with the same faded border and the same smell of her cupboard. Only its use has changed, from something worn to something leaned on. The name saree belonged to the shape and to the daily dealing. The cotton was there before the shape and will be there after it. Chemistry gives a plain parallel: a metal melted and recast is the same metal, and a block of ice is the same water. Seeing the lasting material under a changing form can loosen the sense that everything is being lost. Krishna teaches this as a test of what is real in a thing. It does not remove grief. It does not say the saree was unimportant, and it does not return his mother. It only shows him what remains in his hands while the shape changes.
