Prakriti is the stuff the world is made from. Purusha, the one beyond, is what holds it up. Time is what brings the hidden into view. These three are Brahman, and I am that. So creation goes on, one thing after another, without a break. The great principle serves the unfolding of the gunas, and it runs through to the stage of keeping, for as long as the Lord's glance rests on it.

Krishna gives three words for three causes. Upadana is the material cause, from taking up: the clay a pot is made of. Adhara is the support, the ground a thing rests on. Kala is time, and here it is the abhivyanjaka, the one that brings what is already there into the open. Prakriti is the material, purusha the support, time the revealer. Krishna says these three are Brahman, and that he is Brahman. So the stuff, the base and the unfolding are not three rivals. All three are him. Then he describes how the world moves. It comes forth in order, before and after, without a pause. The mahat, the first great stirring of prakriti, exists so that the gunas can spread out into a world. It carries on until the stage of keeping, and it lasts as long as the Lord's look lasts. The commentators read that look as the will that keeps creation going. Krishna teaches this to Uddhava to answer a worry about counting. Teachers list the elements differently, and Uddhava cannot tell which list is right. Krishna says to look at what the lists point to. He asks Uddhava to see one source behind the material, the base and the passing of time.

A loaf of bread has three makers. The flour is the stuff, the tin holds it up, and the hours in the warm oven bring it out as a loaf. Matter, support and time are the three causes, and the verse says one Krishna stands behind all of them.

1. Pick one ordinary thing that grows or changes slowly, such as a plant on a sill, dough rising, or a bruise healing. 2. Look at it once in the morning and once in the evening for a week. 3. Each time, name three things aloud: what it is made of, what holds it, and what time is doing to it. 4. Notice the moments you want to hurry it, and leave it alone.

A farmer stands at the edge of his field the morning after sowing. The soil is bare, and he wants to see green. He feels a pull to scratch at the dirt and check the seed. Krishna's teaching gives him a plainer way to stand there. The seed and soil are the stuff. The ground and water hold it up. Time is what brings the shoot into view, and he does not control that part. Seeing it so, he waits, looks at the sky, and goes back to his other work. What the verse says is that all three, the matter, the base and the passing days, are Krishna. That is the text's own teaching, and it asks the farmer to see his waiting inside something larger than his worry. Ordinary experience confirms that a restless hand does damage to what needs time. The verse does not promise rain, a good yield or any outcome at all. It gives him a way to stand in the field without feeling that everything depends on him.
