Meaning · English
The cosmic body, which lays out the worlds in all their variety, is reached by me and goes to its dissolving into the five elements, together with its worlds. The mortal body dissolves into food. Food dissolves into grain. Grain dissolves into earth. Earth dissolves into smell.
Three words carry this. Virat is the vast cosmic body, the whole ordered world seen as one form. Pancatva means becoming five, the breaking back into the five elements. Gandha is smell, the quality the text assigns to earth. Krishna tells Uddhava that the great cosmic body, with all its worlds, comes at its time to dissolution. Then he brings it down to the scale of one person. The mortal body goes back into food, since food is what built it. Food goes back into grain. Grain goes back into earth, where it grew. Earth goes back into its own quality, smell, which is finer than earth itself. Each step undoes the making of the step before. Krishna teaches this because he is showing Uddhava how the world folds back into its source, step by step, and a body is the nearest thing to show it with. The listener is asked to see the body as something assembled from parts, and so as something that can be taken apart in order. The commentators read the dissolving as an orderly return to cause, not a destruction into nothing.
A knitted sweater is pulled at one loose thread. Row by row it unravels, each row giving back the yarn it was made from, until only a ball of wool is left. The body, food, grain and earth are those rows, each returning to what it was made of.
1. Next time you eat, spend one minute on the plate. Name what it came from: the grain, the field, the soil. 2. Pick up a handful of earth from a plant pot or a garden. Hold it for a minute and remember that every meal you have eaten began as this. 3. Tonight, before sleep, think once of the body you wear as made of that same food and earth. Notice what you feel, without trying to change it.
A farmer's daughter stands at the edge of a harvested field the week after her grandfather's death. She presses a thumb into the soil and thinks of the rotis he ate every day of his life. Krishna's chain gives her somewhere to rest that thought. The body was built from food. The food was built from grain. The grain grew in earth. Each is a step back along the road the body came by, and she can hold her grandfather's death inside that road instead of against it. Ordinary knowledge agrees on the plain facts: what we eat becomes our flesh, plants take what they need from soil, and a body at rest in the ground returns its substance to it. The last step, earth into smell, is the text's own scheme of elements and their qualities. It has no counterpart in how chemistry lists matter, and it is better taken as the text's way of speaking. The chain does not take away her grief or make the field feel less empty. It gives the loss a place in an order she can see.
