Virtue Under Pressure
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 40.9
Meaning · English
King, hear one more teaching, of great worth and the highest of all. Virtue is never to be given up out of desire, out of fear, or out of greed. It is not to be given up even for the sake of one's own life.
Vidura names the single thing a person must not trade away, and then lists what people usually trade it for. The key word is dharma, from the root dhr, to hold or support. It means the right way of living that holds a person, and the people around him, together. Then come the pressures. Kama is desire, the pull toward what we want. Bhaya is fear, the push away from what threatens us. Lobha is greed, or temptation, the wish for more than is ours. Last is jivita, life itself. Vidura says even this does not justify dropping dharma. Each pressure is a different door out of right action. Some people leave by wanting, some by being afraid, some by being offered a prize, and some because their survival seems to demand it. Vidura closes all four. He says this to a king who lies awake, pulled between a son he loves and what he knows is right. The reason is not given in this line itself. The lines after it supply it: pleasure and pain pass, and virtue lasts.
A fence post set deep in the ground stays upright when the wind leans on it, while a post only pushed into loose soil goes over at the first gust. Dharma is the deep setting. Desire, fear, greed and the wish to survive are the wind, each pushing from a different side.
1. Tonight, before sleep, think of one choice you made today that you knew was not quite right. Ask which pull moved you: wanting, fear, or the offer of a gain. 2. Name it in one plain word, silently. Do not argue with it. 3. Tomorrow, when you feel one of those pulls on a small matter, such as a shortcut or a convenient excuse, stop for three breaths and notice where it sits in your body. Then decide.
