Two Companions at Death

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 40.16

Meaning · English

When a man departs for the next world, only two go with him: the good he has done and the harm he has done. Nothing else walks that road beside him.

Vidura's point turns on two words. Punya comes from a root meaning to purify, and it names the good a person has done, the deeds that leave something clean behind. Papa names the harm done, the deeds that leave a stain. Together they are a person's whole account. The verse says that at death a man is accompanied by exactly these two, and by nothing else. Wealth, family and friends stay behind. Only the record of his own acts goes with him. Vidura speaks this way because Dhritarashtra lies awake, troubled by what he is about to set in motion. Vidura has just described the body burned and the property divided. He now names what survives that. This is the reason he gives for weighing an act before beginning it. The act, the one who does it, and the purpose behind it all end up in the account that travels with the doer. Once the deed is done, no one else can carry it for him. A king acts for many people, but the result of each choice still lands on the one who made it. So the question to ask before beginning is what the act will add to that account.

A traveler boards a night ferry that allows only two bags, and he packed both himself over many years. Nobody can swap them at the gangway. In the same way, the good and the harm a person has done are the only luggage that crosses with him.

1. Pick one task you are about to begin today, such as a message, a purchase or a promise. 2. Before starting, spend one minute asking three things: what exactly am I doing, who is doing it and in what state of mind, and what is it for? 3. If any answer makes you uneasy, wait an hour or change the plan. 4. In the evening, note in one line which act you would be glad to have beside you.
