Om as the Support
Katha Upanishad 1.2.17
Meaning · English
This is the best support. This is the highest support. One who knows this support is held in honor in the world of Brahman.
Yama is still speaking to Nachiketas about the syllable Om. The word to take apart is alambana, "support." It comes from a root meaning to hang from or lean on: a handhold, something a weight rests upon. Two words rank it. Shreshtha means best, the most excellent of its kind. Para means highest, or beyond, the one that leads past the rest. Yama says the same thing twice, once in each word. Then comes the promise. Brahman is the vast reality the Vedas point toward. Brahmaloka is the world of Brahman, and mahiyate means to be made great, to be honored there. Yama's reason is plain. A mind cannot simply grasp what has no shape. It needs something to hold while it reaches, and Om is the thing to hold. Notice that the verse says knowing it. Yama does not say repeating it. Knowing the support means understanding what it holds up and what it points to. He asks Nachiketas for that understanding, not for a habit of sound. Shankara, in his commentary, reads Om as the means of reaching Brahman, whether in its higher or lower aspect, and reads the honor as the result of that reaching.
A rope handrail runs beside a steep, dark stairway. It does not carry you up, and it is not the top. But you grip it, and your feet find each step because of it. Om is that rope for the mind, and Brahman is the landing at the top.
1. Choose one quiet moment today, such as just after waking or before the evening meal. Sit with your back straight for five minutes. 2. Breathe in naturally. On each slow breath out, say Om softly, about eight times. 3. Listen to the sound from its start until it fades into silence. Notice where your attention rests. 4. When your mind wanders, return to the sound without scolding yourself. Do this daily for a week and notice whether returning gets easier.
A woman sits in a hospital waiting room at three in the morning while her mother is in surgery. Her thoughts run ahead to every bad outcome. Her hands will not stay still. Yama's teaching to Nachiketas would give her one thing to lean on. She would not try to stop the thoughts. She would breathe out slowly and let one sound, Om, travel the length of that breath. Then she would listen for the quiet after it. When the thoughts pulled her away, she would come back to the sound. Ordinary experience agrees that a long breath out steadies the body, and that a mind with one simple thing to hold runs less wildly. The Katha speaks of a deeper support than calm, one that leads toward Brahman. But even the small version is something to grip in that hour. It does not change what happens in the operating room, and it does not take away fear or grief. It is no substitute for the surgeon, or for a doctor if her own body needs care.
