Hidden in the Heart's Cave
Katha Upanishad 1.2.20
Meaning · English
Smaller than the smallest, greater than the greatest, the Self lies hidden in the heart of every living creature. One who has no craving sees it, and is free of sorrow. Through the clearing of the mind and senses, he beholds the Self's greatness.
Yama answers Nachiketas with a riddle of size. Atman, the Self, the awareness that looks out through each living being, is smaller than the smallest thing and greater than the greatest. Nothing can be measured against it. The verse places it in the guha, a cave or hidden place, which stands for the heart. It is not lost. It is simply covered over, in every creature. Three phrases carry the rest. Akratu means without kratu, which is will, scheming, wanting. The one who sees the Self is not driven by cravings. Vita-shoka means sorrow gone. Seeing and freedom from grief arrive together. Dhatu-prasada joins dhatu, what supports or constitutes us, with prasada, clearness or grace. Shankara reads it mainly as the clearing of the senses and mind, and he also allows the older reading, the grace of the Creator. Yama's reason is that the Self is never missing. What is missing is a settled mind to receive it. The listener is asked to look to the quiet of the mind, not to a faraway place.
A coin lies at the bottom of a pond, and a child has just run through the shallows. The water is brown and the coin cannot be seen. Left alone, the silt sinks and the coin appears where it always was. The Self is the coin, craving and grief are the stirred silt, and the settling is the clearing.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before sleep with your phone out of reach. Do not try to think of anything in particular. 2. When a want rises, such as a purchase, a reply, or a point to win, name it silently: "wanting." Do not follow it. 3. Notice what is present just after it passes. Stay with that for a few breaths. 4. Repeat for one week, same hour, and notice whether the water seems clearer by the end.
A woman stands in her kitchen at dawn with the phone in her hand. Her brother has not spoken to her in two years. She wants an apology, and she wants to be right, and she cannot tell whether she wants to call him at all. Yama's teaching says the Self is already there beneath this, hidden, and that craving and sorrow are what cloud it. In that moment she would not need to settle the quarrel first. She would notice the wanting as wanting, put the phone down, and let a few minutes pass. Ordinary experience confirms that a hurried, stirred-up mind judges poorly, and that after rest the same problem looks different. From that quieter place she may call, or write, or wait, and the choice would be hers and not the quarrel's. The verse does not promise that her brother will answer, that the grief of the estrangement will vanish, or that the call will go well. It says only that something steady lies under the stirring, and that clearing the mind is how it is seen.
