Mistaking What I Am
Dakshinamurti Stotram 5

Meaning · English
Debaters take the body, the breath, the senses, the shifting intellect, or emptiness as 'I', deceived like women, children, the blind or the dull. Salutation to the teacher who ends illusion's great confusion.
Ask what the word 'I' points to, and people answer differently. Some say the body. Some say the breath that keeps it going. Some say the senses, or the intellect, though it changes by the hour. Some say there is nothing at all, only emptiness. The hymn calls every one of these a confident mistake, like a woman, a child, a blind person or a dull-witted one misjudging what is in front of them. The confusion is not a personal failing. It is spun by the power of illusion, and the teacher is the one who undoes it.
People say 'I'm parked outside' when it is the car that is parked. Nobody truly believes they are made of steel and tyres. The car is something they use, and in daily speech it slips into the word 'I'. Body, breath, senses and thinking mind are like that car: things the self uses, spoken of as if they were the self.
