Sleep Like an Eclipse

Meaning · English
Veiled by illusion like an eclipsed sun or moon, the person in deep sleep is bare being, senses withdrawn; waking, he recognizes, 'I slept.' To that teacher, Dakshinamurti, salutation.
In dreamless sleep the senses and the thinking mind are gathered in. Nothing is seen, nothing is thought. Yet the person does not vanish. What is left is bare existence, covered over by illusion the way an eclipse covers the sun without putting it out. The proof comes at waking. You say, 'I was asleep just now,' and you recognize yourself as the one who was there. That steady one, present through sleep, is who the teacher points to.
A phone set down with its screen gone black. No messages, no pictures, nothing on display. Tap it, and the same page is there, right where you left it. The phone never switched off; only the screen went dark. Sleep is like that: the senses go dark, the person stays on, and waking shows it was there all along.
