What Stays Through Change

Dakshinamurti Stotram 7

Meaning · English

Childhood, youth, old age; waking, dream, deep sleep: each state passes, yet the 'I' keeps shining within. To the guru who shows this Self by his gracious hand-sign, this bow.

A life moves through stages. First a child, then a young adult, then someone old. Each day moves through waking, dreaming and deep sleep. Every one of these ends and gives way to the next. One thing never drops out: the plain sense of 'I', present in all of them and lit from inside. That steady 'I' is the Self. The guru does not argue it into place. He shows it to those who come to him, with an auspicious sign of his hand.

Picture an old family album. A baby on a rug, a boy in a school uniform, a man with grey hair. No two faces match, yet the person turning the pages points at each one and says 'that's me.' The photos are the passing stages. The one pointing, the same on every page, is the 'I' the hymn means.
