Meaning · English
Earth, water, fire, air, space, sun, moon, person: the moving and still world shines as his eight forms. On reflection, nothing exists apart from him. To the guru, Dakshinamurti, this bow.
There is a list of eight. The first five are earth, water, fire, air and open space. Then come the sun, the moon, and the person living among them. Between them they cover everything that walks and everything rooted in place. All eight are called the forms of one Lord, the way he shows himself. Then there is a second step. Anyone who thinks it through finds nothing standing apart from him. The world is not something next to the guru. It is how he appears.
Picture a goldsmith's tray holding a ring, a chain, a bangle, a pair of earrings and more, eight pieces in eight shapes. Melt any one of them and only gold is left. None of them was ever anything else. Earth, sun, moon and the person are like those shapes, and the one appearing as each of them is the same throughout.
