Utthita Parsvakonasana — extended side angle
Asanas as Taught Today 4
Meaning · English
Utthita Parsvakonasana, the extended side-angle seat: utthita is raised, stretched out; parsva is the side, the flank; kona is the angle, the corner; asana is the seat or posture. In English, the extended side angle pose.
Take the name apart. Utthita comes from a root meaning to stand up or rise, and it is used for something raised and extended. Parsva is the side of the body, the flank and ribs. Kona is an angle or corner. Asana is a seat, a way of being placed. Together: the raised side-angle posture. The angle is real. The bent front leg makes one corner, and the long line from the back heel through the hip, ribs and arm to the fingertips makes the other side of it. The hatha manuals, the Pradipika, the Gheranda Samhita and the Shiva Samhita, do not describe this posture. It is modern postural yoga, shaped in the twentieth century in the Mysore line of Krishnamacharya and the schools that grew from him. It is placed here plainly as that. What the old tradition does offer is a frame. Yoga Sutras 2.46 to 2.48 say the seat should be steady and easy, that effort should loosen, and that the mind should rest on the infinite. A standing posture can be held to that measure. The legs work, yet the breath stays slow and the face stays quiet. The schools teach this one for a wide stance, a long side body, and a chest opened towards the sky. It asks for strength in the legs and ease in the rest, and it asks for the same on the second side.
1. Stand tall with your feet together and your arms by your sides. Let your weight fall evenly through both feet. 2. Breathe in. Step your feet wide apart, wider than for the triangle, and stretch your arms out at shoulder height, palms down. 3. Breathe out. Turn one foot out, and bend that knee until it is right above the ankle. Begin with the right if you like. The back foot turns in slightly, and the front heel lines up with the arch of the back foot. 4. Lower the hand on the bent-knee side to the floor beside that foot, and stretch the other arm over your ear. If the floor is far, rest the fingertips on a block. 5. Stay here. Make one long line from the back heel to the fingertips of the upper hand, and breathe slowly. Stay for several slow breaths. The count is modern teaching, not the lesson's. 6. Keep the back leg straight and strong, and turn the chest towards the sky. Your eyes may look up past the upper arm. If the neck complains, look ahead or down. 7. Breathe in. Press into both feet, straighten the front knee, and come up with the arms wide. 8. Breathe out. Bring the feet together, and lower the arms. 9. Now the other side. Turn the other foot out and repeat from step 2. 10. Stand still, and feel the strength in both legs. Fine points: the front knee points the way the front foot points, never falling inward. The bottom hand rests lightly and does not take the weight, which stays in the legs. Reach out through the top fingers before you reach up, so the length comes first and the turn second. Never force the chest open or the hand down.
The front leg does most of the holding. The thigh muscles and the buttocks work to keep the knee over the ankle, and the outer hip works to keep the knee from collapsing inward. The back leg is straight and firm, and its inner thigh and calf lengthen as the stance widens. Between them the groin and inner thighs stretch. The side of the trunk is the real subject. The body bends sideways from the hip, so the ribs on the upper side open and the muscles between the ribs and along the waist lengthen, while the lower side folds closer. The spine curves sideways and then turns a little, as the chest rolls towards the sky. The upper shoulder and arm reach long, which asks something of the shoulder muscles and spreads the shoulder blade. Breath follows the shape. Breathing in goes with lengthening and standing, and breathing out goes with bending and settling. In the pose, the upper ribs have more room than the lower, so the breath is felt as a widening on that side. Slow breathing keeps the effort honest, because gripping the breath shows at once. For the mind, the pose gives a lot to attend to, the legs, the line, the sky-ward chest, and little room to wander. In the tradition's account, steadiness in the seat is what lets the mind rest. That is the tradition's reading, not a physiological claim.
No old text speaks of this posture, so there is no verse claim to report. The schools that teach it, in the Krishnamacharya line and those that followed, say it builds steadiness and strength in the legs and hips, lengthens the sides of the body, and opens the chest and shoulders. They teach it for stamina and for balance of the two sides. Some teachers add that holding a wide, demanding shape with slow breath trains patience and attention. These are the schools' words, offered as their teaching, and no claim of cure or prevention is made here.
A gardener is kneeling less these days and instead stands at the edge of a long bed, reaching sideways to pull weeds with one hand on her thigh. That small sideways bend from a wide stance is close to this posture, and it shows what the shape is for: loaded legs, a long side, an arm reaching out past the body. Today's mainstream understanding agrees on the plain mechanics. Standing postures that hold the body weight on bent legs work the thigh and hip muscles. Reaching along the side stretches the muscles of the waist and ribs. Slow, unforced breathing during effort is sensible, and attending to the body in this way can calm a busy mind for the time of the practice. Regular gentle strength and flexibility work is widely recommended. What has no modern support is the tradition's account in terms of prana or the subtle channels. These are the tradition's frame, with no matching measurable structure. Claims that the pose treats particular illnesses are not established, and none is made here.
This is not medical advice, and a page cannot correct a body the way a teacher can. This pose is learnt with a teacher, not from a page. Stop if you feel pain, as distinct from effort, and come out slowly. Take particular care, or choose a gentler form or leave it out, with knee trouble, hip problems, a disc problem or other back injury, a recent surgery, shoulder pain, or a stiff or painful neck. High or low blood pressure, dizziness and pregnancy also call for a teacher's advice first, since the wide stance and the turned head change how the body is carried. Never push the knee past the ankle, never force the hand down, and never turn the neck further than it goes easily.
Gentler: rest the lower forearm on the front thigh instead of the floor, or place the lower hand on a block set beside the foot. Shorten the stance a little. Keep the top arm on the hip instead of overhead. Stand with the back heel against a wall for steadiness. If the neck is tender, look down at the floor. Fuller: lower the hand to the floor outside the front foot as the hips allow, and extend the top arm along the ear so the line from heel to fingertips is straight. With more strength, hold the line longer while breathing slowly. Do the other side the same, and keep the two sides equal in time.
The knee drifts past the ankle: step wider until the shin stands upright. The front knee falls inward: press it gently towards the little-toe side, in line with the foot. The weight sinks onto the lower hand: lift the hand a little and let the legs hold you. The back leg collapses or the back foot lifts: press the outer edge of that foot down and keep the leg straight. The chest folds towards the floor: turn it up and back towards the sky. The breath is held while the neck cranes upward: breathe slowly and let the gaze come down.
