Both Are Mistaken

Bhagavad Gita 2.19

Meaning · English

One who takes this self to be the slayer, and one who takes it to be slain, are both without knowledge. This self neither slays nor is it killed.

Krishna names two opposite beliefs and calls both wrong. The first person thinks the self is a hantar, a slayer. The second thinks it is hata, slain. The word for what they lack is vijanita, from jna, to know: neither one truly knows. Krishna adds that this self does not kill and is not killed. Arjuna is afraid on both sides. He fears being the one who kills his teachers and cousins, and he fears watching them be killed. Krishna answers both fears together. The one who is struck, and the one who strikes, are the same self, and it is not the kind of thing a weapon reaches. The reason comes from the verses before: the body has an end, and what dwells in it does not. A blow lands on the body, so it cannot end the self. Krishna does not say the battle is unreal. He says Arjuna has misjudged what is at stake in it. The commentators read it differently. Shankara takes it to mean the self does no action at all, so any sense of doing or being done to is ignorance. Ramanuja reads it as saying the self is distinct from the body, and that killing belongs only to the body. Madhva, who holds that the soul depends wholly on the Lord, reads it as pointing to the Lord as the real actor. The listener is asked to look again at what he calls himself.

A boy throws a stone at the moon's reflection in a puddle. The picture breaks into ripples, and the boy thinks he has struck it. Then the water settles and the moon is whole, never touched. The blow landed on the water. The self is the moon, and the body is the puddle where the blow falls.

1. Tonight, take five quiet minutes and write one sentence about something you feel you broke, or something that broke you. 2. Under it, write exactly what ended: a job, a friendship, a plan, a body part, a day. 3. Read both lines slowly. Notice who was watching it all happen, and that this watcher is still here, unharmed. 4. Say aloud, once, only what you can honestly say about yourself: I did this action, or this happened to me.

A man stands in a hospital corridor at midnight. His father's breathing has stopped, and an hour ago he signed the form to take off the ventilator. Now one sentence loops in his head: I killed him. Krishna's words ask him to look at the sentence itself. The man who signed and the father who died are both described by the same word, the one who acts and the one acted upon, and the teaching says both labels rest on a mistake about what a person is. Step by step, the sentence can be taken apart. What ended was a body that could no longer be kept going. What the son did was sign, out of love and with a doctor's advice. The word killer does not fit what happened, and the teaching adds that the self was never the sort of thing a ventilator, a blade or a signature could end. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: guilt often attaches itself to the nearest hand, whether or not that hand was the cause. The limit is plain. This does not remove the grief, and it does not replace the doctors, the family or the time that mourning needs.
