Meaning · English

It is never born, and it never dies. Having once existed, it does not cease to be, nor come to be again. Unborn, constant, immortal, ancient, it is not destroyed when the body is destroyed.

Three words carry the teaching. Aja means unborn: a, not, and ja, born. Nitya means constant, what stays the same through time. Purana means ancient, what was there before the present moment and is still there. Krishna applies all three to the self, the one who lives in the body. Birth and death are things that happen to bodies, he says. The self does not begin when the body begins, does not come into being again and again, and is not struck when the body is struck. The line about having once existed and not ceasing to be tells Arjuna that the self is not like a flame that appears and then goes out. The reason is Arjuna's grief. He is about to fight, and he is shaking at the thought of killing teachers and kinsmen. Krishna answers by saying what in a person can actually be lost. The verse asks the listener to look at the one who owns a body, not at the body alone. Shankara reads the verse as denying the six changes every living thing goes through: birth, existing, growing, altering, decaying and dying. Ramanuja stresses that the self is a knower, distinct from the body and the same through every body it takes. Madhva holds that the self is eternal but always dependent on the Supreme and never identical with it.

A clay pot sits on a shelf with sky inside it. Someone drops it, and it shatters. The space that was inside it is not broken, because it was never made when the pot was made. The pot is the body, and the space is the self, which no breaking reaches.

1. Tonight, take five minutes with an old photograph of yourself, or look at a scar or a grey hair. Notice how much has changed in the body since then. 2. Ask quietly who it is that has been watching all those changes. Do not hunt for an answer. Just notice the question. 3. The next time worry about your body's ageing or illness rises today, pause for one slow breath and recall that question before you carry on.

A man sits beside his father's hospice bed at three in the morning. The monitor ticks, the breathing is shallow, and he has been told it will not be long. He keeps thinking that everything his father was is about to be switched off. The verse gives him a different thing to hold. Krishna's teaching is that the one who lived in that body was never born with it and is not destroyed with it. So the man can keep sitting without trying to hold the body to a promise it cannot keep. He can hold the hand, say what he has not yet said, and let the fear be about the body without making it a verdict on the person. Ordinary experience gives him a small foothold: the body renews much of itself over the years, yet he has always known this man as his father. The limit is plain. The verse does not take away the grief, the tiredness or the loss, and it does not replace the palliative care team, whose guidance on comfort and on what to expect he should rely on.
