Study as Offering

Bhagavad Gita 18.70

Meaning · English

Whoever studies this sacred dialogue of ours, I shall be worshipped by that person through the sacrifice of knowledge. Such is my opinion.

Three words carry the verse. Dharmya means sacred, something that upholds right living. Jnana means knowledge, and yajna means sacrifice, an offering made with care. Krishna tells Arjuna that anyone who studies their conversation is worshipping him, and the offering is knowledge itself. No fire, flowers or gifts are named. Attention is the gift. He calls it his opinion, matih, a settled view, and says it plainly as his own. The reason follows from what came just before. He has just spoken of teaching this teaching to his devotees. Here he says that even the one who only studies it, who sits with it and tries to understand, gives him something real. The problem it answers is the worry that worship needs special rites or a special person. The Gita says the dialogue is itself the place of worship. It asks the listener to read with care, since a sacrifice done carelessly is hardly a sacrifice. Shankara takes the study as a sacrifice of knowledge in its own right, worth more than ritual offerings. Ramanuja reads it as worship of the Lord that grows from devotion. Madhva stresses that knowing the Lord through this teaching is what pleases him.

A son far from home receives a long letter from his father. He does not skim it. He reads it aloud, line by line, as if his father sat across the table. The reading is the visit. In the same way, careful study of this conversation is itself the offering to the one who spoke it.

1. Choose one verse from this book and a fixed time today, perhaps after dinner, for ten minutes. 2. Read it aloud, slowly, twice. Then read the explanation once. 3. Put the phone out of reach for those ten minutes. 4. Say in one sentence what the verse asks, and notice whether your mind settled or wandered. 5. Return to the same verse tomorrow at the same hour.

A night watchman sits in a gatehouse at two in the morning. The residents are asleep, his shift has hours left, and his mind keeps returning to a loan and a sick brother. He opens one verse on his phone and reads it slowly, then reads it again aloud under his breath. For a few minutes his attention has one thing to hold. The loan has not moved, but the circling thought has loosened its grip, and he finishes the shift a little steadier. The Gita teaches that this kind of reading is itself an offering to Krishna, so those minutes are not stolen from his duties or his worry. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind given one clear thing to rest on tires less than a mind left to circle. The verse does not promise that he will understand every line, that the debt will shrink, or that his brother will recover. It does not replace a doctor for the brother or a plan for the loan. It says only that careful study is worship, and that it can be done from a gatehouse chair as well as a temple.
