Hearing Without Envy
Bhagavad Gita 18.71
Meaning · English
Even a person who only listens, with faith and without envy, becomes free, and reaches the auspicious abodes of those who have done good deeds.
Three words carry it. Shraddha is faith, a trust that lets a person stay with words long enough to be changed by them. Anasuya is the absence of asuya, which means finding fault, grudging, or resenting the speaker or the teaching. Mukta means released, like something untied. Krishna tells Arjuna that a person who listens with trust and without grudge is released, and goes on to the bright worlds of those whose deeds were good. The word 'only' matters. Krishna has just spoken of those who study the dialogue and teach it. Here he widens the door to someone who cannot do either and simply hears it. The reason is that the obstacle is rarely a lack of cleverness. It is a closed, suspicious or jealous mind that cannot take anything in. Remove that, and listening alone does work. What this asks of the listener is an inner posture, not a skill. Shankara reads the freedom as release from sin, followed by the worlds of the pious. Ramanuja stresses that faith and absence of envy are what make the hearing bear fruit. Madhva reads the hearing as leading to those worlds through the Lord's favour.
A window caked with dust still lets in some light, but the room stays dim. Wipe it, and the same sun fills the floor. Faith and the absence of envy are the wiping. The teaching is the same sun, shining on everyone, and the listener's clearness decides how much of it reaches inside.
1. Choose one conversation today where someone older, or someone doing better than you, talks about what they know. 2. For five minutes, listen only. Do not prepare your reply or hunt for a flaw. 3. When a small sting of comparison or doubt rises, notice it, name it silently as envy or distrust, and return to their words. 4. That evening, write one sentence you took in that you would otherwise have missed.
A woman goes to a friend's housewarming. The friend describes how she built her small business, and the guest feels her attention slide away into comparison: why her, why not me. She nods, but she hears almost nothing. Krishna's teaching changes that moment step by step. She notices the grudge as a grudge. She gives the friend's account the benefit of trust, as faith asks. She stays with the actual words, how the friend started, what went wrong, whom she asked for help. She leaves having received something instead of having guarded herself. Ordinary experience bears this out: a jealous mind hears mostly itself. The Gita's own claim goes further, that such listening frees a person and leads to the worlds of the pious, and that claim is its teaching, offered on its authority. The limit is plain. Listening without envy does not make the friend's success any less real, does not close the gap in one's own circumstances, and does not replace advice from a professional where one is needed.
