Krishna's Final Question
Bhagavad Gita 18.72
Meaning · English
Son of Pritha, have you heard this with a mind gathered on one point? Conqueror of wealth, has the delusion born of ignorance been destroyed in you?
Krishna asks Arjuna two questions, and the first is about how he listened. The words are ekagra chetas: ekagra means one-pointed, literally one peak or one tip, and chetas is the mind that notices and thinks. So the question is whether Arjuna heard with his whole attention on one thing, not scattered. The second question turns on two words. Ajnana is not-knowing, plain ignorance. Sammoha is bewilderment, the confusion that follows when a person does not know what to do or who he is. Krishna asks whether that bewilderment, born of ignorance, has been destroyed, which means ended, not merely softened. The text gives the reason by the way it asks. Arjuna began the whole conversation frozen with confusion about duty and grief, so the teaching is measured by whether that confusion is gone. Krishna does not ask whether Arjuna remembers the words or agrees with them. He addresses him by two names, Partha and Dhananjaya, as a teacher speaking to someone close. Shankara reads the question as the test of whether knowledge of the Self has removed ignorance at its root. Ramanuja stresses the hearing itself, undistracted devotion to what was taught. Madhva reads it as Krishna confirming that Arjuna is ready to act on it. The verse asks the listener to check honestly whether the confusion has truly lifted.
A man wipes a fogged windscreen with his sleeve, and for a moment the road shows through. The only real test is whether he can see the road when he drives on. The teaching is the cloth, the fog is the bewilderment, and clear sight is what Krishna asks about.
1. Choose one conversation or short passage today and give it your whole attention for five minutes, with the phone out of reach. 2. Afterward, write down in one sentence what you heard, in your own words. 3. Name one decision that has felt foggy lately, and ask yourself whether it is any clearer than last week. 4. If it is not, write down the single point still unclear, so you can ask someone about it.
A mother sits in a hospital corridor after a doctor has explained her son's treatment plan. She nodded through all of it, and now she cannot repeat a word. The verse asks two things of her. First, was she really listening, or was her mind running ahead to the worst? She can ask the doctor to go through it again, slowly, and write down the main points. Second, does she now know what to do next, or is the same fog still there? Where it remains, she can name the exact thing she does not understand and ask about only that. Ordinary experience agrees that fear scatters attention and that people often leave an important talk having taken in very little. Checking understanding at the end, by saying it back, is a plain habit that helps. The verse does not promise that the diagnosis will change, that fear will vanish, or that one clear hearing replaces the doctor's care. It only asks whether the confusion has gone.
