Doubt Gone, Ready to Act

Meaning · English
Arjuna said: My illusion is dispelled. By your grace, Achyuta, I have regained my memory. I stand free from doubts, and I shall act on your instructions.
Krishna has just asked whether Arjuna listened with a steady mind and whether his confusion is gone. This is Arjuna's reply, and the claims are his own, made in that moment. Three words carry it. Moha is bewilderment, the clouding of judgment that left him frozen at the start of the book. Smriti is memory, and Arjuna says he has regained it, as if he had forgotten something he once knew. Prasada is grace, a favor freely given, and he credits it with the change. He calls Krishna Achyuta, the one who does not fall, the steady one beside his own unsteadiness. Then he states where he stands: free of doubt, and willing to act on Krishna's instructions. The reason he gives is that he was lost and has been found. He does not say he worked it out alone. His doubt ends in action, not in lasting calm. Shankara reads the lost memory as knowledge of the true self, and the confusion as ignorance of it. Ramanuja reads it as remembering his bond with Krishna and his place as a devoted dependent. Madhva stresses that this clarity comes by the Lord's grace and not by Arjuna's effort alone.
A man tears the house apart looking for his keys, certain they are gone. A friend asks him where he was last. He remembers, and they are in his own coat pocket. The panic ends and he walks out the door. The keys were never lost, only forgotten.
1. Pick one choice you have been circling for days, and write it in a single sentence. 2. Tonight, spend ten minutes saying it aloud to one person you trust, or to the page, and notice which part feels clearer once spoken. 3. Write down one small step that follows from that clarity. 4. Do that step within a day, and notice whether the doubt eases once you are moving.
A young man has put off telling his father that he does not want to run the family shop. After a long evening talking with an uncle he trusts, he walks home and notices that the knot in his chest is gone. He still does not know every detail of what comes next, but he knows what he will say. Arjuna's reply describes this kind of moment. First, the confusion lifts, and he credits the one who spoke with him. Second, he remembers what he already knew underneath the noise. Third, he turns straight to action, naming no new feeling. The young man can do the same: choose a day, say the sentence to his father, and let the doing finish what the clarity began. Ordinary experience shows that doubt often loosens when a trusted person helps us see the matter plainly. The verse does not promise that his father will take the news well, or that the grief of disappointing him will vanish. Arjuna's clarity is also his own testimony in that moment, and it does not guarantee that doubt will never return.
