Seven Marks of the Warrior
Bhagavad Gita 18.43
Meaning · English
Valor, strength, fortitude, skill in weaponry, and not fleeing in battle; large-heartedness and leadership. These make up the work of the warrior and administrative class, born of one's own intrinsic qualities.
Krishna lists seven qualities and calls them the work of the kshatriya, the warrior and administrator. Three words carry the weight. Svabhava means one's own being, the make a person is born with. Dana is giving, large-heartedness: a ruler who holds back nothing from those he protects. Ishvara-bhava is the bearing of one who leads and takes responsibility for others. The rest are plain: valor, strength, fortitude, skill with weapons, and not turning away from the fight. Krishna says this work is born of svabhava. It is not picked from outside. He is speaking to Arjuna, who is trained, strong and steady, and who is now wanting to drop his bow. Krishna's reason is that a person's work should rise from what he already is. Arjuna's fighting is no foreign demand. It is his own nature asking to be used, and the list includes giving and leadership so that strength serves others. Krishna asks Arjuna to see himself in the list. Shankara reads svabhava as the disposition carried from earlier births. Ramanuja reads such work as worship, done for the Lord. Madhva stresses that it is service to Vishnu, who alone grants the result.
A lifeguard sits in a high chair at the pool. She is a strong swimmer, steady when the water goes wild, quick with her skill, and she stays at her post when others run. She also shares what she knows. Her work grows out of what she is. So the seven qualities grow out of the warrior's own make.
1. Tonight, write down three things people have often relied on you for, such as steadiness, speed or generosity. 2. Tomorrow, pick one task you have been avoiding and do the first ten minutes of it, staying with it instead of turning away. 3. This week, give one thing freely, such as time, a skill or a meal, with nothing expected back. 4. At the end of the week, notice which of the three felt most like your own work.
A woman runs a small night clinic in a town where the power has just failed. A man arrives with a child burning with fever. Her hands are shaking, and part of her wants to send them on to the hospital. The verse speaks to that moment. She names what she already has: training, a steady head, a torch, a ledger of what she can give. Then she stays at her post. She speaks calmly to the father, gives what the clinic holds, and asks a neighbour to take charge of the lamps. The verse does not say she will feel no fear. It does not say her skill is enough, and if the child needs a hospital, she sends them there. Ordinary experience shows that people act more steadily when the task matches what they have practised. The verse asks her to use her strength for the sake of those in front of her.
