Farmer, Trader, Helper

Bhagavad Gita 18.44

Meaning · English

Farming, tending cattle and trade are the work of the merchant and farming class, born of their own nature. Work that consists of service is the duty of the worker class, and it too is born of their own nature.

Krishna finishes his list of four kinds of work with the last two. Three words carry it. Karma is action, here meaning a person's work or duty. Svabhava is one's own nature, the qualities a person is born with; the compound svabhava-ja means born of that nature. Paricharya is service, from a root meaning to move around someone and attend to them. Krishna tells Arjuna that the farmer, the cattle-keeper and the trader do work that rises from their own temperament. He says the same of the one whose work is service, calling it natural too. The word 'too' matters. Service is not set lower in the sentence or described with apology; it gets the same phrase as the others. Krishna's reason runs through all four verses: work that fits what a person is made of can be done wholeheartedly, and the next verse says such work leads to perfection. He asks Arjuna to see his own work, whatever it is, as coming from his own nature and not as a borrowed role. Shankara reads the four classes as divisions of duty by nature and training, each offered to God. Ramanuja reads each class's work as worship suited to that person. Madhva stresses that each does the work assigned to him according to his own qualities.

Think of a village kitchen at a wedding. One person tends the fire, one buys vegetables at the market, one carries plates and fills glasses. Nobody calls the plate carrier less than the cook, because the meal fails without any of them. Each task suits a different pair of hands, and together they make one feast.

1. Tonight, write down the three tasks you did today that felt easiest to begin and hardest to put down. 2. Next to each, note in a few words what in you made it so: patience, counting, caring, building. 3. Tomorrow, pick one small task of service, such as clearing a table or helping a neighbour, and do it without hurrying or looking for thanks. 4. Notice whether you rank that task below your other work. Just notice, and leave it at that.

A woman runs a vegetable stall and has just closed after a slow day. A customer remarked that her cousin works in software and earns far more. She feels small as she counts the coins. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. First, she names what she is good at: she knows which produce is fresh, she remembers her regulars, and she weighs honestly. Second, she sees that these skills are hers and that the work uses them fully. Third, she stops measuring the day against a job that calls on a different temperament, and counts it against what the stall needed from her. Ordinary experience agrees that people tend to work longer and with less strain at tasks that suit their abilities, and that comparison with others feels heavy. The teaching does not promise more income, and it does not make a hard week easier to pay for. It also does not say a person cannot change work or learn something new. It offers a way to value the work she is doing now, which the stall owner can hold onto while she decides what comes next.
