Chosen, Not Earned

Katha Upanishad 1.2.23

Meaning · English

The Self is not reached by lectures, nor by a sharp mind, nor by hearing a great deal. Only the one whom the Self itself chooses reaches it. To that one the Self uncovers its own form.

Yama is speaking about the atman, the Self: the inmost knower in every being, which the Upanishad says is what a person truly is. Three ways of reaching for it are set aside. Pravacana is exposition, the explaining and expounding of scripture. Medha is the mind that grasps and holds what it learns. Bahu shruta is hearing much, a large store of teachings taken in. Yama says none of these gets there. Then the turn: the Self is reached by the one it chooses. The root of the word for choosing is the same as wishing for, so the sense is closer to the one it wants than the one it picks. The last clause uses a word meaning to uncover, to take off a veil. The Self shows its own form. Nothing is made or won. Something already there is unveiled. Yama says this because Nachiketas has just heard that the Self cannot be known the way objects are known. A skilled mind gets only more information. Shankara reads the choosing this way: the Self chooses the person who wants it and nothing else, and to that person it reveals its true nature. Learning is not scorned. It is simply not the cause.

A house stands with no handle on the outside of its door. A visitor can knock, study the plans, and learn the builder's name, but the door opens only when the one inside opens it. The plans are learning, the knocking is effort, and the one inside is the Self, which uncovers itself when it will.

1. Tonight, sit for ten minutes in a quiet room with no book, phone or notes. 2. Notice the urge to collect something: a thought to keep, a fact to look up, a conclusion to reach. Just name it, silently, as reaching. 3. Ask once, plainly: do I want to know about the Self, or to know it? 4. Stay with whatever answer comes, without hurrying to improve it, until the ten minutes end.

A retired teacher has read forty books on peace of mind. The night after her brother's funeral she lies awake, and every sentence she remembers sits in her head like furniture in a closed shop. Yama's words speak to this. First, she can see that knowing about calm and being calm are different things. Ordinary experience confirms it: knowing the rules of sleep does not bring sleep. Second, she can stop treating her memory as the door and let the reading rest for the night. Third, she can lie still and want only the quiet itself, which is what the Upanishad means by being chosen. Yama says the Self uncovers itself to the one it wants. The verse does not say when, and it does not promise that grief eases or that sleep comes by morning. If sleeplessness runs for weeks or low mood deepens, a doctor is the right person to see. The teaching speaks to a different question, namely what the learning is for.
