Memory Cleared Away

Yoga Sutras 1.43

Meaning · English

When memory is wholly cleansed, the mind seems emptied of its own nature and shines as the object alone. This is absorption without reasoning.

Three words carry it. Smriti is memory, what the mind holds from before. Parishuddhi is a thorough cleansing. Svarupa-shunya means empty of one's own form: the mind seems to lose its own shape. Artha-matra is the object only, nothing more. Nirvitarka is without vitarka, the reasoning that turns an object over in words. Plain sense: when memory is cleared away, the mind no longer seems to be itself. It shines as the object alone, and this is nirvitarka. Nothing is added to the thing: no name, no stored picture, no idea about it. Patanjali says this because the sutra before it described the mixed state, where word, object and idea are tangled together. This is the answer to that tangle, and it rests on the crystal of the earlier sutra taking the colour of what it rests on. Here the colour is the object's own, unmixed. Vyasa's Bhashya takes it this way: the object appears as it is, no longer shaped by word-memory, and this is the seed of direct, true knowing. Later readers such as Vachaspati Mishra mostly agree and stress that memory of the word is what falls away. The sutra itself teaches a state, not a method.

A window caked with dust shows a garden only as smudged green. Wipe it clean, and the glass seems to vanish; only the garden stands there. Memory is the dust. The cleared mind is the glass that disappears, and the object is seen as it is.

1. Pick one plain object today: a cup, a leaf, a stone. Sit with it for two minutes. 2. Notice the names and stories that rise: its name, where you bought it, what it is for. 3. Let each one pass without following it, and keep looking at the thing itself. 4. Note how often a memory arrived before the looking did. Stop there.
