Absorption on Subtle Things
Yoga Sutras 1.44
Meaning · English
The same account holds when the object is subtle. Absorption on a fine object also comes in two kinds: one that still reflects on it, and one that no longer reflects.
Three words carry this sutra. Vichara comes from a root meaning to move about, so it is a going-over, a turning of the object in thought. Savichara is absorption with that going-over. Nirvichara is absorption without it. Sukshma-vishaya joins sukshma, fine or subtle, with vishaya, the object the mind rests on. So the sutra says that the two kinds of absorption already described also apply when the object is fine and hard to grasp. Patanjali's phrase for the earlier pair is 'this same', and he means the pair he has just laid out. The practice is the same. Only the ground is finer. Patanjali says this because a student could think the stages stop at ordinary objects. He shows that the sequence of reflecting, then resting, repeats at every level. It rests on the two kinds of absorption just before it, where thought and word first mix with the object and then drop away. Vyasa's Bhashya reads it as a direct extension: the same two kinds, now with subtle objects, the first still held within the mind's sense of time and cause, the second showing the object as itself alone. The commentators mostly follow him and do not change the practice.
A faint watermark in a sheet of paper. First you tilt the page toward the light, turning it and comparing angles, and the mark comes and goes. Then you hold it steady and the mark simply stands there. Savichara is the tilting. Nirvichara is the steady seeing. A finer mark needs the same two steps.
1. Once today, sit for five minutes and choose something faint, such as a clock ticking in another room or your own breath at the nostrils. 2. Notice each time you start talking to yourself about it: what it is, where it comes from, how it sounds. That is the going-over. 3. Return to the sound or the breath itself, without commentary, for as long as it stays that way. 4. When the commentary comes back, note that it has, and begin again.
