Dispassion Is Not Enough

Samkhya Karika 45

Meaning · English

From dispassion comes absorption into nature. From passion, which is of rajas, comes the round of births. From power comes freedom from obstruction. From the opposite comes the reverse.

If knowledge frees and virtue lifts, what do dispassion, desire and power do? Samkhya holds that each has its own result. Vairagya, dispassion, leads to prakritilaya, absorption into prakriti, nature. Gaudapada explains why this falls short: it is dispassion without knowledge of the principles. At death such a person dissolves into the eight subtlest forms of nature: primal matter, intellect, ego-sense and the five subtle elements. That is not release, so they are born again. Raga, passion, comes from rajas, the guna or strand of nature that drives restless activity. It keeps the round of births turning. Gaudapada's example is someone who sacrifices and gives gifts to earn pleasure here or in heaven. Aishvarya, power, is eightfold in Gaudapada's reading, beginning with becoming minutely small. It brings freedom from obstruction. Its opposite, powerlessness, brings the reverse: blocked at every turn. Together with the four in verse 44, Gaudapada counts sixteen: eight causes and their eight results.

A seed stored in a dry jar does not grow. It looks finished, quiet, still. Yet nothing in it has changed. Put it in damp soil and it sprouts. Absorption into nature is like that jar: the person rests in nature's subtlest layers, but the seed of becoming is intact. Only knowledge, in Samkhya's view, removes the seed itself.

The distinction is recognisable to modern psychology. Pulling back from desire is not the same as understanding it. Suppressing a craving, or simply going numb to it, often leaves the pattern in place, and it returns when conditions change. Many therapies hold that lasting change involves understanding what drives the behaviour. Desire that keeps renewing itself also fits what is known about reward and habit: seeking pleasure tends to reinforce further seeking. That is a loose parallel only. Rebirth, absorption into subtle nature after death, and eight powers such as becoming tiny have no evidence behind them. Samkhya also rests all this on a dualism of consciousness and matter. Whether consciousness can be explained physically, the hard problem, remains genuinely open.
