Meaning · English

This is the creation of ideas, known as error, incapacity, contentment and fulfilment. Through the unequal clash of the gunas, its kinds number fifty.

What does the mind actually turn out? Samkhya holds that prakriti, nature, produces more than bodies and things. It also produces a 'creation of ideas', pratyaya-sarga: the stances the intellect, buddhi, takes toward whatever it meets. There are four. Error (viparyaya), incapacity (ashakti), contentment (tushti) and fulfilment (siddhi). Gaudapada's commentary shows all four with a post. Wondering whether it is a post or a man is error. Seeing it clearly yet being unable to settle the doubt is incapacity. Shrugging, 'what is it to me?', and not caring to know is contentment. Then, alert, you notice a vine climbing it or a bird perched on it, and you know it is a post. That is fulfilment. Why fifty? Samkhya says every mental state is woven from three gunas, the strands of nature: sattva (clarity), rajas (drive) and tamas (inertia). They are never evenly matched. Gaudapada explains that sometimes one leads while the other two idle, and these unequal mixtures split the four into fifty.

Picture three tubes of paint on a table: white, red and black. Squeeze them out in different amounts and you get dozens of shades, pale pink, brick, charcoal, each one a different balance of the same three. The four stances of the mind work like base colours, and the uneven mix of the three gunas gives the fifty shades of each person's thinking.

Cognitive science would recognise the four stances. Uncertainty about what you are seeing, being stuck with a doubt you cannot resolve, choosing not to look further, and resolving ambiguity from a contextual cue are all studied today: in perception research, in work on metacognition, and in accounts of how the brain uses surrounding evidence to settle an ambiguous image. The idea that people sometimes decline information because it seems not to matter is also well discussed. Where the match ends is the cause. The three gunas have no counterpart in neuroscience or psychology, and modern trait models are only a loose comparison. The figure fifty is a scheme of classification, not something measured. Whether mental states are products of material nature, as Samkhya holds, remains part of the open debate in philosophy of mind.
