Error has five kinds. Incapacity, which comes from damaged instruments, has twenty-eight kinds. Contentment is ninefold, and fulfilment is eightfold.
The question behind it is this. When the intellect, which Samkhya calls buddhi (the faculty that judges and decides), takes a stance toward life, what forms can that stance take? The verse before said there are fifty. This one sorts them into four groups and counts each. Error, viparyaya, has five kinds: seeing things wrongly. Incapacity, ashakti, has twenty-eight kinds, and the sutra gives its cause: the instruments are damaged. These are the organs of sense and action, the mind and the intellect itself. Contentment, tushti, has nine kinds: settling short of freedom. Fulfilment, siddhi, has eight kinds: real steps toward it. Gaudapada names the five errors as darkness, delusion, great delusion, gloom and blinding gloom. He reads contentment as states of knowing coloured by rajas, the restless guna or strand of nature, and fulfilment as states coloured by sattva, the clear strand. Read this way, the list runs roughly from the most clouded condition of mind toward the clearest. The verses that follow unpack each count. This one lays down the map.
Picture a mechanic's checklist for a car that never reaches its destination. The driver has the wrong map. Some parts are broken. The driver pulls over halfway and decides this is far enough. And some parts work well and keep the car moving. The intellect is the car and freedom is the destination. Error is the wrong map, incapacity the broken parts, contentment the early stop, and fulfilment the working parts.
Today's psychology also separates the ways a mind can fail. A false belief is one thing. A damaged sense organ or an injured brain region is another, and neurology treats them very differently. Samkhya's split between error and incapacity from damaged instruments partly matches that distinction, since most of Samkhya's incapacities are failures of the intellect rather than physical injuries. Its idea of contentment, stopping short because one is satisfied, resembles what economists after Herbert Simon call satisficing: accepting good enough instead of the best. The exact numbers are a teaching scheme, not something measured, and the gunas have no modern counterpart. One point is worth noticing. Samkhya places all fifty states in the intellect, which it counts as part of matter, not consciousness. That sits close to modern physicalism about mental states. Whether awareness itself is something more is still the open hard problem of consciousness.
