Five Grades of Error

Samkhya Karika 48

Meaning · English

Darkness has eight forms, and delusion eight as well. Great delusion has ten. Gloom has eighteen, and blind gloom likewise has eighteen.

Samkhya holds that error, which it calls viparyaya, is a family of five, and this sutra counts them. Darkness (tamas) has eight forms, delusion (moha) eight, great delusion (mahamoha) ten, gloom (tamisra) eighteen and blind gloom (andhatamisra) eighteen. That makes sixty-two. Gaudapada's commentary explains each one. Darkness is sinking into one of eight subtle layers of prakriti, nature, regarding oneself as merged in it and thinking 'I am free.' Delusion is clinging to eight extraordinary powers, such as becoming tiny. Even gods like Indra hold these powers, miss freedom, and are reborn when those powers are exhausted. Great delusion is attachment to the five sense objects: sound, touch, form, taste and smell. These are counted twice, once as gods enjoy them and once as humans do. Gloom is delighting in those eighteen goods when they arrive and refusing to accept losing them. Blind gloom is the great anguish of dying in the middle of enjoyment, or of falling from those powers.

Someone walks down cellar stairs with a torch that dims at every landing. On the first landing they mistake the cellar for open air. Lower down they grip whatever they find. At the bottom they see nothing and dread everything. Samkhya's five errors are those landings. They run from quietly mistaking part of nature for the self down to the panic of losing what one held.

The deeper grades sit close to well-studied psychology. Hedonic adaptation is the finding that pleasures fade as people get used to them. Loss aversion is the finding that losses hurt more than equal gains please. Together they resemble gloom and blind gloom: delight in gain, refusal of loss, anguish when it ends. The first grade has a modern echo too. Contemplative traditions and some researchers note that deep absorption states can be mistaken for lasting change. The rest has no modern match. There is no evidence for supernatural powers, for gods exhausting such powers, or for rebirth. The neat totals are a scholastic classification, not a measurement. One question stays open in philosophy of mind: whether any part of what we call the self stands apart from the processes it observes.
