Meaning · English
Incapacity is declared to be the eleven injuries of the organs together with the injuries of the intellect. The intellect's injuries are seventeen, arising from the reversal of the contentments and the attainments.
Samkhya counts twenty-eight kinds of incapacity, ashakti, and this sutra shows where they come from. Samkhya holds that a person meets the world through eleven organs, the indriyas. There are five senses, five organs of action, and the mind (manas) that coordinates them. Each organ can be damaged. Gaudapada names ten of these injuries: deafness, blindness, numbness of the skin, loss of taste, loss of smell, muteness, crippled hands, lameness, impotence, and madness, which is the mind's own injury. The eleventh, failure of the organ of excretion, is implied by the count. Behind all of these stands buddhi, the intellect, the faculty that decides. The sutra says its injuries are seventeen. To find them, take the nine contentments and the eight attainments, and reverse each one. Nine and eight make seventeen. Add the eleven and the total is twenty-eight. Gaudapada adds that these failures follow the same order as the contentments and attainments. Incapacity, then, is not a vague weakness. It is a mapped list of specific breakdowns in the instruments of knowing.
A car can fail in its parts: a dead headlight, a jammed door, a seized wheel. Each fault has a name and its own fix. It can also fail at the wheel, with a driver who turns every good habit into its opposite. The eleven organ-injuries are the faults in the parts. The seventeen intellect-injuries are the driver's good habits turned inside out.
Clinical medicine draws a similar line. Neurologists separate deficits of sense and movement, such as blindness, deafness, loss of smell and paralysis, from disorders of thinking and judgment. Samkhya places madness among the organ-injuries, so it treats the mind as an instrument made of prakriti, nature, and not as consciousness itself. That places the mind among the material instruments, which loosely parallels physicalism about the mind. Samkhya then keeps purusha, the witness, outside the list entirely, which is a dualist move. Defining a disorder as the reverse of a healthy capacity also resembles one way clinicians describe deficits, as loss of a normal function. The exact count of seventeen has no modern counterpart or evidence; it comes from a scheme, not from observation. One question stays open: whether failures of judgment are only failures of an instrument.
