Four contentments are inward, called nature, means, time and luck. Five are outward, arising from turning away from the objects of sense. These nine are held to be the contentments.
Why do people who set out toward freedom stop short? Samkhya's answer is contentment that arrives too early. Tushti, contentment, is the settled sense that this is enough. Four kinds are inward. Gaudapada reads them this way. Nature: a person learns about prakriti (nature, the material source of everything that changes) and its workings, and is satisfied with that knowing alone, without going further. Means: a person takes up the outward signs of renunciation, a staff and a water pot, and trusts them to free him. Time: freedom will come in time anyway, so why study? Luck: it will come by good fortune. For nature, means and time, Gaudapada says plainly that such a person is not freed; luck he lists alongside them. Five kinds are outward, one for each sense object: sound, touch, form, taste and smell. A person turns from them after seeing the trouble in getting things, guarding them, losing them, clinging to them, and harming others to enjoy them. Gaudapada adds that another text gives the nine their own names, and that their opposites count among the failures of the intellect.
1. Tonight, take two minutes to write down one area of your life where you have said 'good enough'. Ask whether it is a rest or a stop. 2. When you catch yourself thinking 'it will sort itself out in time' or 'with luck', write one small step you could take this week instead. 3. Before one purchase or snack today, pause for thirty seconds and name its five costs: getting it, keeping it, losing it, clinging to it, and any harm to others.
Psychology has a close neighbour to this. Herbert Simon called settling for a good-enough option 'satisficing', and it is often sensible; trouble starts when settling ends a search that mattered. Waiting on time or luck resembles what psychologists call an external sense of control, which tends to go with less effort toward a goal. The outward contentments fit well-established findings: pleasures fade as we get used to them, and owning things brings worry about keeping them. So the warning about stalling holds up as everyday psychology. What has no modern match is the goal itself. Samkhya's freedom, consciousness standing apart from changing nature, is a metaphysical claim tied to its dualism, and neither neuroscience nor physicalism can test it. Whether early contentment blocks it remains a question inside the school's own terms.
