Meaning · English
Reasoning, hearing, study, the three strikings-down of pain, gaining friends, and giving: these are the eight fulfilments. The threefold that comes before fulfilment is its curb.
The question behind the list is which states of mind actually carry a person to freedom. Samkhya holds that freedom comes from one insight: purusha, the witness consciousness, is distinct from prakriti, nature and everything that changes. A siddhi, a fulfilment, is any state that delivers that insight. The verse names eight. Reasoning is thinking it through yourself. Gaudapada pictures someone asking what is true and what is highest until the difference dawns. Hearing is learning it from another person's words. Study is working through texts. The striking-down of pain counts as three, one for each kind: pain from your own body and mind, from other beings, and from natural and supernatural forces. Gaudapada has the sufferer turn to a teacher. Gaining a friend means receiving the knowledge through friendship. Giving, Gaudapada says, means supporting wandering teachers with food, shelter and medicine and learning from them. The three groups listed before this one, error, incapacity and contentment, act as an ankusha, an elephant-driver's hook, that holds fulfilment back.
1. Tonight, take ten minutes with paper. Write down one thing in you that stays the same while your moods change. Reason about whether it really does. 2. Read one page of a serious book slowly. Then say its main point aloud in a single sentence. 3. Ask a friend you trust what they have understood about their own mind. Listen without arguing. 4. Do one small practical kindness for someone who has taught you something. 5. Before sleep, notice one place where 'this is good enough' stopped you from going further.
Several of the eight routes match how people are known to learn. Working a problem out yourself, hearing an explanation, studying, and learning alongside peers are all recognised paths in education research. Philosophers still debate testimony. Hume held that words from others must be checked against experience; Thomas Reid treated trust in testimony as a basic source of knowledge. The verse lists both reasoning and hearing without ranking them. Psychology also agrees that distress often drives people to seek help, as in the three pains. The idea of a curb fits what is known about complacency and settling early. The central claim is different. It says that seeing consciousness as distinct from matter ends suffering. That is a dualist view. Physicalists reject it, and the hard problem of consciousness remains open. There is no evidence either way about liberation itself.
