The Soul's Changing Clothes

Bhagavad Gita 2.22

Meaning · English

As a person sheds worn-out garments and accepts new ones, so the embodied soul, casting off worn-out bodies, enters others that are new.

Krishna gives Arjuna a comparison first, then applies it. Three words carry it. Garments are what a person puts on and takes off. Worn-out means used up by age and wear. The embodied one, the dehi, is the owner of a body: the word names someone who has a body, not the body itself. The word for body also carries the sense of something that wears away. So Krishna splits the human being into a wearer and what is worn. A person throws away a frayed shirt and puts on a fresh one, and nobody says the person has died. Krishna says the soul does the same with bodies, casting off the old and entering the new. He says this because Arjuna is overcome with grief at the thought of killing teachers and kinsmen. If death is a change of clothes, the one grieved for is not ended. What Krishna asks of Arjuna is to see who is wearing the body. Shankara reads it as showing the self to be unchanging, with only the body altering, so grief has no ground. Ramanuja reads it as showing the soul to be a real, lasting individual, whose bodies are given by God. Madhva reads it as affirming that each soul stays distinct, now and across bodies.

A tenant moves out of a rented flat whose roof leaks and whose walls have cracked, and moves into a sound one down the road. The flat is old and gets handed back. The tenant carries on, same person, same habits. The body is the flat, the soul is the tenant.

1. Tonight, pick one worn-out thing you own, such as a shirt or a pair of chappals, and hold it for a moment before you put it away or throw it out. 2. Notice that you feel the thing is finished, yet you are not finished. 3. Tomorrow, sit for one minute and feel your pulse at the wrist. Notice the one who is aware of the beat. 4. Look at a photograph of yourself from ten or more years ago and notice what has changed and what feels the same.

A daughter kneels to button her father's shirt because his hands shake too much to do it. The cloth is soft from washing. His fingers fumble at the top button, and he looks away. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in small steps. She sees that the failing hands and the man who is embarrassed are not the same thing. She slows down and talks to him, not to the tremor. She lets the worn shirt be a worn shirt. Ordinary experience backs the plain part: bodies tire, tissues are renewed over the years, and the sense of being the same person carries through. The teaching about the soul and the next body is the Gita's own, and it is given as Krishna's word to Arjuna. It does not take away her grief at watching him age, and it does not make the next hour easy. A tremor that is new or getting worse is a reason to see a doctor, and the verse does not stand in for one.
