The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2 · What Never Dies

Beyond Blade, Fire, Water, Wind

Bhagavad Gita 2.23

Meaning · English

Weapons cannot cut this soul. Fire cannot burn it. Water cannot wet it, and wind cannot dry it.

Krishna goes through four ways a body can be destroyed. A blade cuts it, fire burns it, water soaks and rots it, and wind dries it out. Then he says none of them reaches the soul. Three words carry the weight. Shastra means a weapon, an instrument for striking. Kleda means wetness, the softening and dissolving that water does. Pavaka, his word for fire, literally means the purifier, the thing that consumes whatever it touches. Krishna's reason is that each of these acts only on things that can be divided, soaked, or burned away, and he teaches that the soul is not such a thing. He says this to Arjuna, who is shaking at the thought of killing teachers and cousins. Krishna is answering that grief by naming what the soul cannot lose. The listener is asked to see that the worst the world can do is done to the body. Shankara reads it as saying the soul has no parts, so nothing can cut or burn it. Ramanuja reads it as saying the soul is a different kind of thing from matter, so matter cannot act on it. Madhva reads it as saying the soul is safe because it always rests in God's keeping.

A beam of torchlight crosses a dark room. Wave a knife through it and the beam stays whole. Hold a wet cloth in it and it does not soak. Put a flame in it and it does not burn. The beam is the soul, and the knife, cloth, and flame are everything that can happen to a body.

1. Today, when a worry rises, write it in one plain line. 2. Beside it, mark whether it is about the body, belongings, or standing, which blade, fire, water, and wind can reach, or about something else. 3. Read the verse's four sentences aloud once, slowly. 4. Sit for one minute and notice what your breath and shoulders do. Do not force any change.

A daughter stands at the cremation ground while the pyre for her father is lit. The heat reaches her face. She has been told that nothing here is him, and she cannot yet feel it. The verse offers her one thing to hold. Krishna names the fire, and says it burns what can be burned and goes no further. She does not have to believe it all at once. She can let the line sit beside what her eyes see, and look at the flames as the end of the body only. Her breathing may slow a little, because the sight now has a limit set around it. Ordinary experience bears out one small part of this: a grief that has a shape is easier to carry than a grief that has none. The verse does not promise that she will stop crying, that the loss will feel smaller, or that the weeks after will be easy. It does not replace the people who sit with her, or a doctor if the grief becomes too heavy to bear.
